From the forests of medieval England to the furthest corners of the galaxy, two of the biggest soundtrack labels are kicking off 2018 with some great archival titles.
Intrada announced last night their first release of the year: an expansion of Michael Kamen's score to Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. The 1991 adaptation of the English folk hero, starring Kevin Costner in the title role and star turns from Morgan Freeman (as Azeem, one of the Merry Men) and Alan Rickman (as the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham), was the year's second highest-grossing film, and spun off a musical sensation in Bryan Adams' hit single "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You," written for the film by Adams, producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange and composer Kamen. But Kamen's score is hardly a slouch either: one of his most richly heroic works, an excerpt from the soundtrack became the opening fanfare to the film's production company, Morgan Creek Pictures.
The new limited double-disc edition of Prince of Thieves features the complete score as heard in the film, plus 11 alternate cues and different mixes prepared during production. (Neither Adams' hit nor Jeff Lynne's "Wild Times," as heard on the original soundtrack, appear here.) Kay Marshall and Joe Sikoriyak designed the new album package, while Frank K. DeWald penned new liner notes.
La-La Land starts off 2018 at the edge of the final frontier, with a long-anticipated second volume of music from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The third live-action Trek show, set during the same time as the successful Star Trek: The Next Generation, is considered one of the best achievements in the more than 50 years of Gene Roddenberry's sci-fi franchise, featuring diverse and complex characters, intelligent storylines and captivating music, most notably Dennis McCarthy's bold, moving title theme. A four-disc anthology released by the label in 2013 featured music from the entire series; the second volume follows suit and with similar structure, featuring a disc devoted to McCarthy, a disc devoted to composer Jay Chattaway, one featuring "new recruits" David Bell, Paul Bailllargeon and Gregory Smith and an odds and ends disc featuring all the previous composers on source music, alternates and more.
The new DS9 volume features liner notes by Randall D. Larson and art direction by Mark Banning (with original front cover art by Daren R. Dochterman). Banning, Ford A. Thaxton, Lukas Kendall and James Nelson produce the set, mastered by Nelson and limited to 3,000 copies. (A limited number will feature autographs by McCarthy, Belll and Smith.)
