Some Disc! 'Charlotte's Web' Soundtrack Makes CD Debut From Varese

In 1973, Hanna-Barbera's animated adaptation of E.B. White's beloved children's novel Charlotte's Web was released; over time, it became a multi-generational classic. 45 years later, a major milestone occurs with the first ever CD release of the film's winning soundtrack, courtesy of Varese Sarabande.

Though White professed to not care for the film, condemning it as "a travesty" and admitting "I don't care much for jolly songs," Charlotte's Web has incredibly gained fans with time. The story of Wilbur, a timid pig (Henry Gibson) saved from slaughter by the kind arachnid Charlotte (Debbie Reynolds) and a host of colorful, helpful barnyard creatures (including Agnes Moorehead's ditzy Goose and Paul Lynde's deliciously goofy Templeton the rat), continues to be a favorite among children - particularly with the advent of home video. The colorful Hanna-Barbera animation that television audiences had loved on The Jetsons, The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! certainly helped, but a large chunk of its acclaim lay in the "simple, singable and sincere" original songs written for the film by the duo of Richard and Robert Sherman.

The Sherman Brothers were well-known in the 1960s for creating winning song scores for Disney films (including the live-action Mary Poppins (1964), The Jungle Book (1967) and many of Disneyland's premier attractions), and, after Walt Disney's passing in 1966, began to branch out with projects like the song score to another popular kids' book-turned-film: Ian Fleming's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). That perfectly potent, Shermanesque mix of fun, upbeat songs ("Chin Up," "A Veritable Smorgasbord") and tender, moving tunes ("Mother Earth and Father Time") keeps this one of their most classic projects - and after not one but two vinyl reissues from Varese last year (including a color variant for Barnes & Noble stores), it's exciting for this score to finally bow on the CD format.

Charlotte's Web weaves into stores on February 16 - pre-order your copy below!

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

I thought the Brady Bunch kids were on this? Maybe that was something else.

You are thinking of the Brady Bunch Phonographic Album. They did two songs from Charlotte's Web on that LP, the title track and Zuckerman's Famous Pig. The Brady Bunch albums were also on the Paramount Records label.

This is awesome news! I have been waiting for this to be released on CD for decades. I finally broke down a few months back and picked up a copy on vinyl because I gave up on a CD release ever happening. (I should start doing that for all of my "wish list" items! This is the third or fourth time I have bought some obscure album on vinyl only to have a totally out of the blue CD release a few months later. LOL!!)

Their score for CHARLOTTE's WEB is, in my opinion, the Sherman Brothers masterpiece and the late Debbie Reynolds was in superb voice when she recorded these tracks. The Paramount LPs had vinyl imperfections that made it impossible ti enjoy this soundtrack, which otherwise had excellent stereo sound for the era. Now, thanks to the CD release, we can finally hear and enjoy this classic score properly.
