Real Gone is kicking off its April release slate with a quartet of limited edition soundtrack vinyl releases, and we've got the details for you right here. All titles are due on April 6.
First up is the score to 1985's Commando which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and was directed by Mark Lester. Schwarzenegger plays Special Forces Colonel John Matrix, who is forced into a fight with a South American dictator when his daughter is kidnapped. The actor was cementing his place as one of the biggest action stars in the world at this point, having just come off of the first Terminator film and soon to go on to Predator in 1987. The score was written by James Horner who was only eight years into his film composing career in 1985, but had already penned the scores for some major films including Star Trek II and III, 48 Hours and Cocoon, among others. Horner's suspenseful score for Commando takes its inspiration from the film's South American setting for its orchestration. Real Gone's new vinyl edition replicates the material from La-La Land's 2011 expanded presentation on CD, and features three unused score cues and Power Station's "Someday, Somehow, Someone's Gotta Pay." This new 2-LP edition features a gatefold with production stills and is available in "Bone White with Black Face Paint Splatter" vinyl, limited to 1,500 copies. An edition in "Gunmetal Grey and Blood Spatter" vinyl is available exclusively on Real Gone's website and is limited to 200 copies.
Moving ten years later brings us to 1995's Tank Girl. The Rachel Talalay-helmed dystopian future film is set in 2033 and starred Lori Petty and Naomi Watts as Tank Girl and Jet Girl who had to fight against Malcolm McDowell's Kesslee, whose company controls all of the water in the drought-ravaged new world order. It also featured Iggy Pop and Ice-T. The movie was based upon a British comic series and did not perform well at the box office, although it has gained some cult status over the years. Graeme Revell composed the score for the film, but its soundtrack and soundtrack album were put together by Courtney Love and features many female indie-rock acts of the 1990s including Bjork, L7, Veruca Salt and Love's own group Hole. Several tracks were also made exclusively for the album including Devo's re-recording of their "Girl U Want," The Magnificent Bastards' "Mockingbird Girl" (this group was a side project of Stone Temple Pilots' Scott Weiland) and duet between Joan Jett and The Replacements' Paul Westerberg on "Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love." The album peaked at No. 72 on the Billboard 200 at the time and has never received a vinyl release before. Real Gone's new vinyl edition features and gatefold cover and comes in "Aqua Blue" vinyl, limited to 1,000 copies.
Next is the soundtrack album to 2003's Something's Gotta Give. Directed by Nancy Meyers, the romantic comedy starred Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. As one of the few movies in the genre to focus on main characters later in life, the film garnered positive reviews and was successful at the box office. Keaton would win a Golden Globe and be nominated for an Academy Award for her performance. The soundtrack album featured standards and bossa nova from such artists as Louis Armstrong, Steve Tyrell, Astrud Gilberto and Eartha Kitt, among others. It also features Jack Nicholson's performance of "La Vie En Rose" from the film. The album makes its vinyl debut in Real Gone's new edition. It comes in "Sea Foam Green" vinyl and is limited to 1,000 copies.
The final entry in Real Gone's April soundtrack lineup is of more recent vintage: the soundtrack to last year's Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return from Netflix. Mystery Science Theater 3000 was created by and starred Joel Hodgson as a janitor trapped on a space station forced to watch B-movies with his robot companions. As they view the films, they make comments upon them and with their silhouettes shown at the bottom of the screen and with some interstitial skits. The cult hit ran for ten seasons from 1988-1999 with Hodgson being replaced onscreen by Michael J. Nelson in the fifth season. A feature film was released in 1996. Hodgson crowd-funded a fourteen episode eleventh season which premiered last year on Netflix. It starred Jonah Ray, Patton Oswalt, and Felicia Day. Shout! Factory released the soundtrack last year on CD featuring songs, incidental music and instrumental bumpers from the season. Neil Patrick Harris and Mark Hamill are two of the guest stars who get in on the fun. Released in association with Shout Factory!, Real Gone's new vinyl edition comes features a gatefold cover and personal message from Hodgson, comes in "Blue-Grey Satellite of Love" and is limited to 1000 copies.
