We've told you about some of Real Gone's June releases earlier and now we've got the news of more items on the slate for that month including CD reissues from Cowboy, the Grateful Dead and a vinyl reissue of the Predator soundtrack, all due June 1.
Back in 2014, Real Gone reissued the first two albums by the band Cowboy: 1970's Reach For The Sky and 1971's 5'll Getcha Ten. Now, they are completing the group's Capricorn output by releasing their final two album for the label: 1974's Boyer & Talton and 1977's self-titled Cowboy.
The group formed in Jacksonville in 1969 with six members including Scott Boyer and Tommy Talton. Boyer had been in The 31st of February with Duane and Gregg Allman. After the formation of The Allman Brothers Band, Duane suggested that Phil Walden, owner of The Allman Brothers' label Capricorn Records, sign Cowboy. He did so and their debut album was released in 1970, produced by Johnny Sandlin. Boyer and Talton would also play on many Capricorn releases during this period. Another Cowboy album followed in 1971.
But by 1974, Boyer and Talton were the only remaining members left in the group. For the third album, simply entitled Boyer & Talton, the duo, with producer Sandlin, gathered a new group of musicians to join them including Bill Stewart on drums, future Charlie Daniels Band bassist Charlie Hayward, Allman Brothers Band members Chuck Leavell and Jaimoe on keyboards and percussion, respectively, and saxophonists Randall Bramblett and David Brown. These were many of the same players who had backed Gregg Allman on his first solo album, Laid Back, in 1973 and would join him on the tour which would be documented on the Gregg Allman on Tour album.
The configuration of the band didn't stay together long, however, and Boyer and Talton would join with a new producer, Capricorn engineer Sam Whiteside, for a more pop/country-rock-oriented album in 1977: Cowboy. They brought in new musicians as well including Arch Pearson on bass, Chip Condon on keyboards, and Chip Miller on drums. It would prove to be the group's final album as they broke up soon after and Capricorn Records itself closed in 1979. Boyer and Talton worked together occasionally over the years and reformed Cowboy in 2007. They recorded material for a new album with Sandlin as producer, but it was never released. A live album did emerge in 2011, chronicling a concert from 2010. Boyer passed away a little over a month ago in February.
Real Gone's reissues of Boyer & Talton is expanded by two tracks: "Time Will Take Us" and "Where Will You Go" from the Gregg Allman on Tour album. Both reissues feature liner notes by Scott Schinder with exclusive quotes from Talton and photos from his private archive. Both have been remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision. It is the CD debut for both albums.
Next up is the latest of Real Gone's continuing Grateful Dead projects. The label began bringing the Road Trips live series to general retail in 2016 and now they are releasing Road Trips Vol. 4 No.2: April Fools' '88. This concert was recorded at Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, N.J. There are not many Dead shows which have been released from 1988. This date falls under a year after the Dead's hit album In the Dark from 1987. It includes some unusual covers and the little-performed "To Lay Me Down." The 3-CD set includes the full show from April 1, 1988 and over half the show from the previous night. It has been mastered by Jeffrey Norman in HDCD sound and features a full-color booklet with notes and photos. The set was first available through the band's website in February, 2011.
The last item is a vinyl reissue to a classic 1980s movie score from Alan Silvestri (Avengers: Infinity War, Ready Player One): Predator. The 1987 action film was directed John McTiernan and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. It told the tale of a special forces unit who are stalked by an alien hunter in a Central American jungle. The film was hit and spawned an entire franchise with two sequels (and a third schedule for 2018), two crossover films with the Alien franchise, books, comic books, video games and a lot of merchandise. When he scored Predator, the prolific Silvestri was just two years removed from what might be his most iconic score with 1985's Back To the Future (although one could even debate that when he has written over a hundred film and television scores in his 55-year career). Silvestri's score matches the hard-hitting tone of the film and features electronic touches and driving percussion. Surprisingly, given Silvestri's popularity and the success of the film, no album for the Predator score was released at the time. Fans would have to wait 16 years for Varese Sarabande to finally release the music on CD in 2003. This was followed by a limited edition by Intrada in 2010 which was remastered and featured some re-editing of the cues. That edition sold out in one day. Intrada released a second edition in 2012 with some other minor tweaks. This new vinyl edition from Real Gone is based upon the last Intrada version. Real Gone first released a version of this back in September. They are now releasing a new colored-vinyl edition in "Blood Red and Predator Dreads Blue" splatter vinyl, limited to 1,000 copies. There is also a glow-in-the-dark edition, limited to 100 copies, available exclusively through Real Gone's website. The 2-LP gatefold package also features new cover artwork from Rafal Wechterowicaz and includes production stills.
