Omnivore Recordings has been living up to its name with a little bit of everything - and the next few months promise to continue in that tradition with high-profile titles from artists including Vince Guaraldi, Gene Clark, The Rose Garden, Dennis Coffey, and Malo!
Good grief! Jazz great Vince Guaraldi is best known for his immortal scores for Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts animated television specials and first feature film, but the multi-faceted pianist and composer was a man of many talents. All of those - including his work for Peanuts - comes in the spotlight on a new 2-CD set, The Complete Warner Bros.-Seven Arts Recordings. Due on July 6, this collection boasts three full Guaraldi albums -Oh, Good Grief! (1968), The Eclectic Vince Guaraldi (1969), and Alma-Ville (1970). Oh, Good Grief! found Guaraldi revisiting his seminal Peanuts compositions for his new label, while he artistically stretched out on the latter two LPs. The Eclectic Vince Guaraldi placed him in rock territory and he even stepped in front of the microphone to sing; Alma-Ville returned him to more traditional (but no less inventive) jazz territory. Three previously unreleased tracks - including covers of "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" and "The Beat Goes On" - round out this exciting collection which features liner notes by Guaraldi historian Derrick Bang. Also on July 6, Oh, Good Grief! will be reissued on vinyl in a Kevin Gray remaster pressed at RTI on translucent red vinyl.
Omnivore is no stranger to the music of Gene Clark, country-rock pioneer and founding member of The Byrds. Now, the label has a holy grail to Clark fans: his 1967 post-Byrds demos as first heard on the ultra-rare Liberty Records acetate Gene Clark Sings for You. And that's not all. The expanded Sings for You, due on June 15 in CD, 2-LP vinyl, and digital formats, also boasts the contents of a second acetate recorded by Clark for the band The Rose Garden for their consideration, as well as a demo of "Till Today" from the personal collection of the band's John Noreen. (The LP does not contain a download card.)
"Till Today" was recorded by The Rose Garden on their sole long-player, released in 1968 on Atco. Now, that album is also being reissued on CD as part of A Trip Through the Garden: The Rose Garden Collection. The folk-rock quintet best known for the U.S. top 20 hit "Next Plane to London" only released one LP and two post-album single sides, but Omnivore is bolstering those with a whopping 14 more tracks including live cuts, studio and rehearsal tracks. Both A Trip Through the Garden and Gene Clark Sings for You feature new liner notes by John Einarson and remastering by Michael Graves.
Last year, Resonance Records released Hot Coffey in the D, a live set from Detroit guitar hero Dennis Coffey recorded in 1968 live at Morey Baker's Showplace Lounge. Now, Omnivore is continuing the Coffey story with a new live release from the same group of Coffey, Lyman Woodard on organ, and Melvin Davis on drums. Though this album is drawn from the same residency at Morey Baker's, the track listing is entirely different. One Night at Morey's: 1968 will be available on CD and digital platforms on June 1. Taken directly from Coffey and production partner Mike Theodore's own tapes, it features original songs as well as smoking soul-jazz covers of "Eleanor Rigby," "I'm a Midnight Mover," "Cissy Strut," "Groovin'," and more.
Latin Bugaloo: The Warner Bros. Singles collects all fourteen A- and B-sides released by Latin rock band Malo on Warner Bros. Records between 1971 and 1973. The Bay Area band blended funk, soul, rock, and jazz, and augmented its raw, powerful sound with a horn section. As Malo was known for its extended jamming, all of the singles were cut down to radio-friendly length; accordingly, the tracks here have been sourced from the original single masters. Latin Bugaloo includes the hit "Suavecito" as well as a single only released in Turkey containing "Pana" b/w "Just Say Goodbye." It's due on May 25 on CD only.
