This Friday, Mercury and UMe will unveil the second round of collections this year celebrating the late Barry White. The series kicked off earlier this year with The Complete 20th Century Singles (1973-1979) on CD, The 20th Century Singles (1973-1979) on vinyl, and Love's Theme: The Best of the 20th Century Singles on CD. Now, the labels are looking to Love Unlimited - the vocal trio and the orchestra - for another pair of releases.
Love Unlimited, the vocal group, was formed in 1969 by White's future wife Glodean James, her sister Linda James, and their cousin Diane Taylor. Three years later, in 1972, the trio scored a top 20 Pop hit with "Walkin' in the Rain with the One I Love," written and produced by White (who also made an appearance on the track). The UNI, MCA, and 20th Century Singles 1972-1975 includes 19 tracks from Love Unlimited beginning with that seminal single release. All told, when not serving as White's backup group, they recorded five albums between 1972 and 1979. Three of those LPs are represented via the A- and B-sides compiled on this set. (The final two albums were released on the Unlimited Gold label, first distributed by 20th Century and then by CBS/Columbia.) The collection will be available on either one CD or two vinyl LPs.
It's joined by an anthology from The Love Unlimited Orchestra. White "borrowed" the name for his plush orchestral productions often arranged and conducted in tandem with the great Gene Page. The Orchestra released ten albums between 1974 and 1983 on 20th Century and later Unlimited Gold including one soundtrack with joint credit shared with White and Love Unlimited (the trio). The 20th Century Records Singles 1973-1979 collects all fourteen of Love Unlimited Orchestra's U.S. 7-inch singles (A- and B-sides) released on 20th Century between 1973-1979, beginning of course with "Love's Theme," as well as the 12-inch single disco versions of another seven tracks, on two CDs. The same collection will also be available on a vinyl 3-LP set.
Look for these two collections on CD and vinyl this Friday from Mercury and UMe! You'll find pre-order links below!

Elsewhere early promotion of these two issues suggested Unlimited Gold sides would be included. I wonder what happened to keep them off? I have the crappy Unlimited Gold probably-from-vinyl Priority CD reissues but missed the higher quality but now rare Japanese ones. Will this reissue program get around to the Unlimited Gold albums? Does UNI have rights? They are full of overlooked gems.

I'll have to opt for the cd versions. Like the Barry White collection the lp versions are a little steep.
I'd like to see a Gene Page collection of his single releases. Not just the album reissues. Multiple labels are involved, but some f those UK reissue labels seem to be really good with that.

We FINALLY see the release of the Love Unlimited singles. I was waiting for the 4 instrumental B-sides for ages now. This is making my day folks! So happy. Very anxious to get hold of the remastered Love Unlimited albums later this year, some of them never before available on CD.

Is Barry White - The 20th Century Records Albums box still on? I see the vinyl version listed on Amazon for Oct 26 but nothing about the CD version.
Joe Marchese says
Hi Robert, it's still definitely coming. Universal only confirmed the upcoming 20th Century sets today; we'll have more coverage soon. (We tend to avoid here covering anything based on Amazon links because they do often come and go, with tentative information.) I'm sure the correct links will be up soon, or the original links will be reactivated.
