As Jeff Lynne gears up for a North American tour this August, Legacy Recordings has announced a new box set celebrating the legacy of Electric Light Orchestra. The U.K. Singles Volume One: 1972-1978 will be released on Friday, September 21, collecting ELO's 45 RPM singles and one EP originally released in the U.K. between those years on 16 newly-remastered vinyl discs.
Beginning with 1972's "10538 Overture" b/w "First Movement (Jumping Biz)" and ending with 1978's The ELO EP containing "Can't Get It Out of My Head" and "Strange Magic" b/w "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle" and "Evil Woman," Volume One has every one of its 7-inch discs remastered from the original analog tapes, housed in painstakingly recreated versions of the original sleeves with replica labels.
Many of the band's most enduring songs can be heard on this collection including "Evil Woman" (U.K. No. 10), "Strange Magic" (U.K. No. 38), "Livin' Thing" (U.K. No. 4), "Telephone Line" (U.K. No. 8), and "Mr. Blue Sky" (U.K. No. 6). All told, ELO racked up sales of over 50 million records worldwide during its original 1972-1986 period, notching twenty top 20s on the U.K. Singles Chart and 15 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
The concert documentary Jeff Lynne's ELO: Wembley or Bust will make its U.S. television premiere on Showtime this Friday, July 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on-air, on demand and via streaming. One week later, on August 3, the special 12-inch vinyl reissue of ELO's Secret Messages arrives, restoring it to Jeff Lynne's original conception as a double album.
