R.E.M.'s relationship with the BBC was a long and fruitful one, and on October 19, Craft Recordings will celebrate their joint musical journey with a new retrospective release. R.E.M. at the BBC will be available as a super deluxe 8CD/1DVD box set as well as in 2-CD and 2-LP formats. The collections have been curated from the archives of both the band and the BBC, and boast rare and previously unreleased live and studio recordings spanning 1984-2008.
The in-studio recordings featured on the box set include a John Peel Session (1998), Drivetime and Mark and Lard appearances (2003) and a Radio One Live Lounge performance (2008). Live broadcasts include an early show from Nottingham's Rock City (1984), a chronicle of the band's 1995 Monster Tour stop at the Milton Keynes National Bowl, a 1999 Glastonbury headlining set, and a private concert held at London's St. James's Church. The ninth disc, a DVD, includes the home video premiere of the Accelerating Backwards film. The film, previously broadcast only in the U.K., features interviews with Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe as well as performance footage. The DVD is rounded out by a complete episode of Later...With Jools Holland from 1998, as well as TV appearances from Top of the Pops and more.
The liner notes include reminiscences from BBC hosts and production personnel including Jo Whiley and Mark Hagen, while journalist Tom Doyle has penned an overview of the entire 30+-year period covered in the collection.
The Best of R.E.M. at the BBC, available on 2 CDs or 2 LPs, offers a selection of highlights culled from the box set. The full box track listing will be available on digital platforms. You'll find the complete track listing below as well as pre-order links! R.E.M. at the BBC arrives from Craft Recordings on October 19!
