Big Love: Fleetwood Mac Celebrates 50 Years With New Collection "Don't Stop"

Fleetwood Mac hasn't stopped thinking about tomorrow.  The venerable group takes off in October on a new tour featuring the band debuts of Mike Campbell and Neil Finn, following the shock departure of Lindsey Buckingham earlier in the year.  To coincide with the tour, however, the Mac is taking a look back on 50 years of music with a new 50-song collection on 3 CDs or 5 LPs.  50 Years: Don't Stop arrives from Warner Bros. Records and Rhino on November 16, along with a single-CD distillation.  All tracks will also be available on digital platforms.

The new collection takes in every era of the band's history via hit singles and album tracks and a smattering of rarities.  It features members including Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, Jeremy Spencer, John McVie, Danny Kirwan, Christine McVie, Bob Welch, Bob Weston, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Billy Burnette, Rick Vito, Dave Mason, and Bekka Bramlett.  The first disc celebrates the early years as the band shifted from pure blues-rock to mainstream rock-pop, beginning in 1968 with FM's self-titled debut and ending in 1974 with its ninth studio album, Heroes Are Hard To Find.  A number of the songs here became top ten hits in the U.K., including "Man Of The World," "Oh Well - Pt. 1," "The Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown)," and the chart-topping "Albatross."  The disc also includes the band's original version of Bob Welch's "Sentimental Lady," which Welch took to the top ten of the U.S. Pop and AC charts in 1978 (with a little help from his FM pals).

Disc Two captures the birth of the "classic" FM line-up of Buckingham, Nicks, Christine and John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood, featuring selections from Fleetwood Mac (1975), Rumours (1977), and Tusk (1979), as well as the concert album Live (1980). "Over My Head," "Rhiannon," "Say You Love Me," "Landslide," "Go Your Own Way," "Don't Stop," "You Make Loving Fun," and the No. 1 smash "Dreams" are among the familiar tracks on this disc.

The third and final CD draws on the period between 1982 and 2013, including albums Mirage (1982), Tango in the Night (1987), Behind the Mask (1990), Time (1995), the live The Dance (1997), and Say You Will (2003).  It spotlights major U.S. hits such as "Hold Me" (No. 4), "Gypsy" (No. 12), "Big Love" (No. 5), "Little Lies" (No. 4), and "Everywhere" (No. 14). Also featured are a handful of rarities ("Paper Doll" and "As Long As You Follow" from the box set The Chain and Greatest Hits, respectively); a live version of "Silver Springs" from The Dance (1997), and "Sad Angel" from the band's most recent release, the digital-only Extended Play (2013).  (The remaining three tracks from Extended Play are still unreleased on CD.)

David Wild has provided new liner notes for the package, and rare photographs of the band are also promised.  50 Years: Don't Stop arrives from Warner Bros. Records/Rhino on November 16.  You'll find the complete track listing and pre-order links below!

This is sort of interesting. There are some unexpected selections here -- I'm a big fan of "Fireflies" -- and it seems reasonably balanced and makes some effort to cover their whole career. The 25th anniversary box, The Chain, really shortchanged the Bob Welch era, but it was also four discs, and I can't help wishing for a better update. I'm not sure this is it.

Fleetwood Mac presents a problem in that compilations tend to go heavy, almost by necessity, on the first two Buckingham/Nicks-era records, both of which anyone interested in Fleetwood Mac is already likely to own. The Chain (and to a smaller extent this new set) tweaked things a bit by presenting some different mixes, single versions, etc. I can't decide if the sequencing of that set works or not.

Ultimately I wish this were a six-disc set that went deeper and offered more surprises. Alternatively, an 80-minute single disc cherrypicking of the Bob Welch-era highlights would also be cool, but I can't imagine that would be anyone's highest priority these days.

I would have said probably the same things as Tom already has here.

I do like the chronological sequencing on this set that was not the case
      with The Chain box.

Yet the single CD Highlights puts its 3 pre-Buckingham-Nicks songs at the end, which is kind of odd. So I would probably skip that one and go for the 3-CD set.

The only downside is the restriction of 50 tracks - some classics left off as a result such as Family Man, Songbird, World Turning & No Questions Asked means this collection galls short of being the definitive compilation it should have been. Additionally should have included all the Extended Play EP tracks (unreleased on CD still to this day) Also would have been nice to add some new tracks with the new lineup (or live tracks from the new lineup) to bring the story up to the present.

I just don't understand why Rhino cannot put together a compilation of what I call The Forgotten Years. Not taking anything away from any period of Fleetwood Mac, but there has been plenty of Peter Green and the Fleetwood Mac LP and beyond reissues, compilations, live LPs and rare cuts. The Kiln House to Mystery to Me time period is grossly ignored and therefore greatly unappreciated by many. With all the reissues coming out every week, I can't believe that this wouldn't be worth Rhino's while.
