Whoa-oh, here they come! On Friday, Legacy Recordings reissued a treasure trove of rare remixes from the enduring rock 'n' soul duo of Daryl Hall and John Oates onto all digital platforms, including two new collections and three EPs.
Single Mixes scoops up 16 alternate versions of some of Hall and Oates' greatest hits, including the U.K.-only mix of the 1981 chart-topper "Private Eyes," the seven-inch remixes of "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" (No. 1, 1981) and "One on One" (No. 7, 1983), the video mix of "Out of Touch" (No. 1, 1984) and the single version of "Everything Your Heart Desires" (No. 3, 1988). The set concludes with the radio remix and "unplugged" versions of "Starting All Over Again," the soul classic covered on the team's sophomore Arista album, 1990's Change of Season.
Extended Mixes is a "two-disc" anthology with a total of 22 tracks spanning tracks from 1980-1988. Chart-toppers "Kiss on My List," "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)," "Maneater," and "Out of Touch" are all here in various versions, as well as other U.S. top ten smashes such as "One on One," "Family Man," "Say It Isn't So," "Adult Education," and "Method of Modern Love." The set concludes with two different versions of "Missed Opportunity" from 1988's Ooh Yeah!, the duo's first LP for Arista Records. Finally, Legacy has served up three EPs boasting additional remixes of "Everything Your Heart Desires," "Downtown Life," and "Talking All Night," all originally from Ooh Yeah!.
All of the above releases from Philadelphia's favorite sons Daryl Hall and John Oates are available now from your favorite digital service providers to download and/or stream. We've included links below to Amazon!

Thanks for the heads up! Would have missed completely without it.

No CD release -> no thank you Legacy Recordings..........
Mark H. says
We can hope that Real Gone picks this up for release, as they have for many other Sony digital-only collections.
Andrew says
Will these be released in lossless FLAC?
Joe says
Qobuz has lossless.
Andrew says
Not available in the United States yet?
Patrick Michaels says
The Alternate Version of Talking All Night is previously unreleased! It wasn't on the 12" promo.
BillyD says
Surprised there isn't a physical version. It's been a while since Legacy squeezed anything from the catalogue. Don't worry, there's more where that came from.
Perhaps after another round of these versions Legacy will box them all up.
Many of these extended versions appear on the last round of reissues.
kurt says
Wow. If only Madonna's back catalogue were controlled by Sony...
Scott says
I agree with the sentiment, but think that actually has more to do with Madonna's control over her catalog than Sire/Warner Bros. They would likely milk her back catalog for everything they could if she would let them. She has always been very resistant to revisit any of her older material.
kurt says
I understand your point but the utter mess of the "Celebration" set doesn't suggest that Warner would do it right if they had carte blanche.
Zubb says
No CD's? No sale.
Bill says
I think some of these tracks have been available for purchase from itunes individually. But without a CD I am not at all interested.
MattNYC says
I echo the sentiment "no CD no sale". I have the two-volume Japanese "12 Inch Collection" CDs (2003) and they're both superb in sound quality and selection. Let's see something like that on CD.
Rob Maurer says
I have the Japanese 12 inch collections too. Not sure I need these.
Mike Cox says
Agree--no cd no sale
Pete S says
I’ll add my request for a physical release and maybe eventually someone might take notice. I probably have a lot of this scattered about on 12” singles etc but it would be good to have it all together.
Stefano says
Joe, first I must complement you on your thoroughly detailed posts (like this one), including the full details which version was previously available on which (vinyl) original. What a treat! For me that's crucial information. I bet many readers will agree.
About this digital-only release: I fully understand that some readers only want a physical CD and will pass on this digital release. I was one of them for a long time, until I had to accept that more and more 12 inch versions only get a digital release due to the decline of CD sales (except for Germany and Japan). I am thrilled to finally be able to buy the full Hall & Oates 12 inches (and 7 inch remixes) in master quality, so I'm in. Hope Legacy will do the same for the Daryl Hall RCA catalogue. Many mixes still not available in master quality.
Qobuz offers them in lossless quality, so why not print the covers and burn the wav files on CD and you have a physical product.
Rob Maurer says
Because Qobuz is still not available in America, at least not without sneaking in through VPN.
Jason Michael says
No point in having those " Amazon Canada TBD" placeholders. Amazon.ca doesn't sell downloads.
extinct zebroid says
Is there not a unique 7” mix for ‘Some things are better left unsaid’? Unreleased on CD or digitally, as far as I know. Still, brilliant news.
SC says
I also recall hearing an edited version of "Unsaid" on the radio back when that song was charting.
Some of these versions are new to me. I never heard a version of "Missed Opportunity" without a cold start - I always thought the radio/45 version was simply an early fade of the album track. And when was "Method Of Modern Love" so remixed? I recall the radio/45 version simply being a trimmed version of the album track with fewer of Daryl's usual (and abundant) oohs, aahs, woos and yelps.
Stefano says
The remix of Method was edited for the US 7 inch promo B-side. Copy this link to see it: https://www.discogs.com/Daryl-Hall-John-Oates-Method-Of-Modern-Love/release/5745645
SC says
Thanks! So, "Method" is a B-side. Has the A-side ever been available digitally?
Rob Maurer says
For FLAC fans...anybody check 7digital or Tidal? They both sell lossless in the US where Qobuz is unavailable.
lwm says
Any idea why "Adult Education (Special Rock Mix)" is not available?
Stefano says
Iwm, that version is available on a few compilations, although not stated. Check out this one: https://www.discogs.com/Daryl-Hall-John-Oates-Ultimate-Daryl-Hall-John-Oates/master/847489

Hmmm, I've listened to a few of the Extended Mixes on Spotify, and...well... I don't think they're very good. Best not mess with perfection. For example, the first track 'Kiss On My List' - Remix, is horrible. It almost sounds like a demo version and the lead vocal sounds as if all processing has been removed and is weak - like it is all out front and unsupported. And as for the dub versions with they're staccato vocals, and record scratches - no thanks. I haven't really listened to the single mixes yet, but I'm thinking that these releases are more for hard-core completists.
Eric M. says
The remixes get a lot better from 1983 on, as remixing itself also generally improved. The Jellybean mixes of “Say It Isn't So” and the Arthur Baker mixes from the ‘Big Bam Boom’ singles are definitely worth munching on if you like ‘80s-style remixes.

While this generally a great and welcome release, it’s a major disappointment to find that “One on One” on ‘Single Mixes’ is not the sought-after ‘7” Remix’ as named, but the usual LP Version fade. Given the other content in the set, I feel like this is likely an error, but who knows if it can be corrected. Does anyone here have contacts at Sony Legacy to put a bug in their ear?
