Hours of unreleased soundtrack music? Oft-requested titles from favorite composers and popular film series? It's definitely Black Friday season at La-La Land Records! The venerable soundtrack label closed the book on 2018 with five brand-new film and television score expansions - a total of 18 discs' worth of material, including three works involving one of the most successful living soundtrack composers and projects related to two world-renowned franchises.
First up, La-La Land's successful Spielberg-Williams collaboration - the label has expanded many of the director and composer's works together, from E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial to Jurassic Park - continues with one of the duo's most serious works: the score to Schindler's List. Based on Thomas Keneally's novelized account of the incredible true story, Liam Neeson plays Oskar Schindler, a German profiteer who risks his livelihood during World War II to rescue some 1,100 Jews from the horrors of the Nazis during the Holocaust.
With aching solos from violinist Itzhak Perlman, Schindler's List was a major touchstone in what was then only a two-decade-long partnership between director and composer. The film won seven Oscars, including Spielberg's first Best Picture and Best Director wins as well as Williams' fifth Academy Award for the soundtrack. Now, on the eve of the film's timely re-release to mark its 25th anniversary, La-La Land presents the original soundtrack with a bonus disc offering nearly 30 minutes of alternate film versions and unreleased cues. Williams' longtime restorer Mike Matessino again serves here as producer, editor, mastering engineer and liner notes writer for this title, sourcing the original album from its 24-karat gold Ultimate Masterdisc digital master and bonus material from recording engineer Shawn Murphy's digital stereo masters. Jim Titus contributes striking packaging design to this set, limited to 4000 units.
Next, the label keeps the Williams theme going with an exhaustive dive into the music of sci-fi series Land Of The Giants, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year! Irwin Allen's quirky, ambitious program, in the tradition of his other small-screen genre classics like Lost In Space, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea and The Time Tunnel, centered on the crew of a futuristic starcraft sent through a dimensional warp toward a planet where people and objects are 12 times their size on Earth. Like Lost In Space, Williams was one of the series' many composers, alongside notable names like Leith Stevens, Artie Kane, Joseph Mullendore and Richard LaSalle. Twenty-six unique episode soundtracks are presented here, including an unused score for the series pilot by Alexander Courage, who composed the iconic theme to Star Trek. Producers include Jeff Bond, Neil S. Bulk, Nick Redman (for 20th Century-Fox) and Kevin Burns (executive producer). Bond supplies liner notes in a package designed by Mark Banning and limited to 1000 units.
We then go from giants to vampires with an expansion of Wojciech Kilar's score to Bram Stoker's Dracula. Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 adaptation of the classic horror tale starred Gary Oldman in the titular role, with supporting performances by Winona Ryder and Anthony Hopkins. The Polish-born Kilar's music was one of his most recognizable works to American audiences, alongside 1999's The Ninth Gate and 2002's BAFTA-nominated The Pianist. This triple-disc set, limited to 3000 copies, presents Kilar's work as composed for the picture, plus 20 alternate and bonus cues, across two discs; the third disc features the original soundtrack album, including Annie Lennox's U.K. Top 5 hit "Love Song For a Vampire." Dan Goldwasser produces and designs the package, James Nelson is mastering engineer and Tim Grieving contributes liner notes.
Following last year's expansion of David Arnold's score to the James Bond film Die Another Day, La-La Land reloads with a new presentation of another Arnold score for the legendary British spy: 1999's The World Is Not Enough. In Pierce Brosnan's third outing as 007, he must protect a billionaire heiress from a global terrorist bent on causing a nuclear meltdown in Istanbul - with a few twists along the way. Arnold's high-energy compositions made him a worthy heir to longtime Bond composer John Barry; World was his second of five outings doing the music of Bond. Here, Arnold also collaborated with lyricist Don Black (who wrote the words for the themes to Thunderball, Diamonds Are Forever and The Man With The Golden Gun) to pen two songs: the sweeping "The World Is Not Enough," played by Scottish-American rock group Garbage, and "Only Myself To Blame," a romantic ballad sung by British pop hero Scott Walker. Both songs are included in this 2CD presentation of the soundtrack, as well as their previously unreleased demos by Arnold himself! Arnold co-produces with Neil S. Bulk, Doug Schwartz handles mastering from MGM's original digital stereo tapes, and Grieving and Goldwasser again offer liner notes and package design (with new insights from Don Black and director Michael Apted featuring in the essay). This set caps at 5000 units.
Finally, and most tantalizingly, La-La Land enters a world of pure magic with Harry Potter: The John Williams Soundtrack Collection, an expansive 7CD box set offering the legendary composer's works for the wizarding world of Harry Potter. The world over doubtlessly knows J.K. Rowling's seven-book series about an orphan boy who discovers his magical past at a school for wizards and witches. Along the way, he meets a colorful cast of friends and foes and prepares for a confrontation with Lord Voldemort, the evil sorcerer who killed Potter's parents but was disembodied when he attempted to destroy the infant Harry. The Potter series, published between 1997 and 2007 spun off eight film adaptations from 2001 to 2011; a sequel play currently runs on Broadway and the West End, and the second of a planned five film spin-offs in the Fantastic Beasts series just hit theaters this month. Altogether, the series has sold more than 500 million books worldwide and grossed some $25 billion.
For the first three films - Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone (2001), Harry Potter and The Chamber Of Secrets (2002) and Harry Potter and The Prisoner Of Azkaban (2004) - John Williams was conscripted to bring his gifts of fantasy-oriented composition and rich thematic affinities to the Potter series. The resulting themes rank among his most recognized to this day, and brilliantly evolved over the first trio of films. Chris Columbus' formal adaptations of the first two films inspired Williams to create regal themes such as "Hedwig's Theme" (the lilting motif that appears in every film) and "Harry's Wondrous World"; when director Alfonso Cuaron brought a different visual sense to The Prisoner Of Azkaban, Williams changed course as well, creating sinister cues to reflect and anticipate the series' gradual darkness.
In this box, you'll find expanded presentations of all three scores (three discs for Sorcerer's Stone, two each for the others) - a total of nearly eight hours of music, all approved by the composer himself. The package includes the full premiere of a "Children's Suite For Orchestra" recorded early on in the sessions for Sorcerer's Stone and numerous alternate and unreleased cues - the definitive presentation of this brilliant music. Mike Matessino produced, assembled and mastered it all, from original 5.1 and stereo mixes from Simon Rhodes (Sorcerer's Stone, which was newly transferred in high resolution) and Shawn Murphy (Chamber and Prisoner). Matessino also wrote copious liner notes across four booklets (36 pages for Sorcerer, 24 apiece for Chamber and Prisoner, and an additional 44-page booklet inside the box), all designed by Jim Titus. 5000 copies will be made.
You can order all five releases now at the label's official site. Schindler's List and The World Is Not Enough start shipping December 3, and the other titles ship December 7. As always, a huge shout-out to La-La Land Records for their immense soundtrack restoration work!
