Ain't It Amazing? Omnivore Collects Buck Owens' '70s Sides on "The Complete Capitol Singles: 1971-1975"

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Are you ready for the third and final volume of Omnivore Recordings' comprehensive series of Buck Owens' Capitol singles?  The Complete Capitol Singles: 1971-1975 is due to arrive Friday, May 31, and will include every side that the legendary country picker/singer/songwriter recorded for the label until the end of his tenure there - 42 tracks in all across two CDs.

The 1970s saw Buck embracing the creative freedom of his own studio, built in a converted theater in his home base of Bakersfield, California.  Away from the confines and strict schedules of Capitol's conventional recording setup, the honky-tonk hero was free to "just call up the guys and tell 'em when to be there."  (To this day, some are surprised to find that the rough-and-tumble Bakersfield sound was conjured by Owens at Capitol's Hollywood studios!)

The environment allowed him to experiment more than ever with various strains of country (bluegrass, country-pop, heart-rending balladry, novelty songs, and more) , and The Complete Capitol Singles: 1971-1975 sees Buck - along with The Buckaroos, his son Buddy, and singer Susan Raye - adapting to the new musical landscape and finding considerable success along the way, to the tune of 9 Top 10 C&W hits!  These include the collection's opening salvo, a tender cover of Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," as well as the No. 1s "Too Old to Cut the Mustard" (by Buck and Buddy) and "Made in Japan."

All of the tracks on this collection have been remastered by Michael Graves and the package also includes a 16-page booklet with new liner notes from Scott B. Bomar that contextualize the material on the double-disc set.  So get those pre-orders in and mark your calendars for May 31 so you can get The Complete Capitol Singles: 1971-1975 in the palm of your hand!

Sam Stone

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day. Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.
