Rolling Stone has broken the news this morning that Rhino Records is getting back to the garden in a big (make that BIG) way. Woodstock 50 - Back to the Garden: The Definitive 50th Anniversary Archive, due August 2, will live up to its name as the last word on the legendary festival. This 38CD/1BD set, limited to 1,969 copies, will include every note performed onstage by every act at Yasgur's Farm over those three days of peace and music, save two tracks by Jimi Hendrix (omitted at the request of his family) and one song from Sha Na Na (which couldn't be used due to a tape gap). Many of these recordings are being released for the very first time. In total, the set boasts an astounding 432 songs, 267 of them previously unreleased - plus crowd announcements and other "sonic memorabilia" from audience members. A Blu-ray of the director's cut of Michael Wadleigh's film is also included.
"There have been large boxed sets devoted to particular eras or tours - the Grateful Dead do a great job of that sort of thing - but there's never, to my knowledge, been an attempt to present a large-scale durational experience of this sort," Andy Zax, the producer and archivist who co-produced the set with Rhino's Steve Woolard, told Rolling Stone. "The Woodstock tapes give us a singular opportunity for a kind of sonic time travel, and my intention is to transport people back to 1969. There aren't many other concerts you could make this argument about."
The box will retail for $799 and will include swag such as a hardbound book by Michael Lang, a replica original program, replica posters, photo prints, a guitar strap, and more, all housed in a screen-printed plywood box with canvas insert.
10CD, 5LP, and 3CD highlights versions will also be released on June 28. Woodstock - Back to the Garden - 50th Anniversary Experience features 162 tracks across 10 CDs and is the first Woodstock collection to feature live recordings of every performer at the festival. This version will be also available via digital download. Woodstock - Back to the Garden - 50th Anniversary Collection collects 42 tracks, and will be available on 3 CDs or 5 LPs.
And that's still not all. Vinyl Me Please will have a special 10LP package (due in early August) limited to 1,000 units pressed on tie-dyed-style colored vinyl. This set contains Woodstock Vols. 1, 2, 3 and 4, which haven't been in print on vinyl since 2009. Get more information here!
Visit Rolling Stone for the rest of Andy Zax's interview about this monumental undertaking. The Definitive 50th Anniversary Archive will not be released to general retail, and will be available exclusively through direct to consumer retailers such as Rhino, Woodstock.com, and dead.net. Head to Rhino to pre-order all iterations. Orders placed with Rhino for the big box will include exclusive Dale Saltzman 18x15 lithographs based on banners from the original festival.
You can find complete track listings as well as pre-order links for all iterations below. All titles are currently available for pre-order at Rhino.com while the Experience and Collection sets are available via Amazon!

Yax Meager says
That's a lot of money for what most people I know who were there called a crap festival with terrible performances and sound...
Garin says
I thought I had the 'definitive collection', it mostly sounded great, some crap, and I get the difference from today's tech and yesterdays. But a reason to not include so many tracks, is an indicator that they were not supposed to be included in the first place, for the very reason they sounded non-pro sound, I would be more interested in Monck's dialog (separate CD), make that a RHINO gem in itself.
Filutek says
I just got really excited about this until I read the last paragraph. How about a 38 CD set with a simple book and without the useless swag retailing for a reasonable amount of money? How come Dylan could give us 36 CD's of the 1966 concerts for about $100? I wondered why it was limited to 1969 copies. I wonder if they will ever sell that many at $799. I'm afraid it would have to be about 75% off for me to go ahead on this one.
Bill B says
I am not a fan of mp3 music, but assuming the recording will have varying levels of fidelity, this would be a great candidate for an mp3 download. I doubt that most people will listen to the entire 38 cds more than a couple of times, I know I wouldn't.
Shaun says
Peace, Love & Profits...
Honestly, who needs all this? Or wants it bad enough to blow $800 on it?
Glenn Burris says
I'm a physical music collector and love box sets, but for the reasons stated here already, this is hard to take seriously. The knee-buckling price, the Happy Meal-prize guitar strap, a book by... Michael Lang? So, he writes, too? Funny, never noticed him in my local book store. Every other writer with more cred (and that would be all of them) must've been busy. And, his bona fides aside, it's hard to believe the guy who takes all the credit for the festival would offer a very objective account.
I've always been interested in hearing professional recordings of the Woodstock performances of the groups that didn't make it into the movie: The Band, CCR, The Dead, Airplane, and for a chance to check out some of the also-rans, like Quill and Bert Sommer. And I think it would great to hear those artists pressed into action for longer than expected or not expecting to play when they did (or at all) like Richie Havens, Melanie, John Sebastian, and Country Joe. But not so much as to drop this kind of bank.
A complete Woodstock set seems like a great idea, but this thing lands like a bloated whale. Now, if the whole thing were streaming on a special site, like the Neil Young thing, for a limited time and you had six-month subscription to hear the music for, I don't know, $10 a month or something, that would work nicely, and I think Rhino might find a lot more people willing to be nostalgic for the rest of the anniversary year than they will find heaving this thing onto their shelves.
For all the history here, I just don't see how you really get your listening money back on this one. Not at double what I was guessing it would cost, certainly.
Thanks, Joe and Company, for a must-read site.
Fletch says
From the linked Rhino site, it looks like there are more modestly priced 10-CD and 3-CD sets also, at $150 and $35 respectively.
Eric Levy says
Don't remember which Jimi Hendrix concert film it was, but at the beginning a young woman is complaining that the local theater is charging $3.00 admission to the film WOODSTOCK. I wonder if she's still alive to see this travesty! In other words, I agree with everyone about the price and all the useless swag. And don't you think anyone who would purchase this box set already has the Blu-ray of the film? But what would capitalism be without double-dipping. Peace, love, and profits indeed!
And shame on Jimi Hendrix's estate for withholding those two songs!
I expect I'm going to shell out for this, but I'm still going to grumble about it. For anyone who cares, you get four additional lithographs if you order it through dead.net.
dave smith says
bet they are the 2 songs that Hendrix only plays on, but does not sing, because it was the other guitar player who did
Ian MacDonald says
Doesn't appear to be every note recorded (CCR played more than 3 songs, the previously released Joe Cocker set has other songs, etc.), but is a much more generous helping of notes than ever released before.
Joe Marchese says
Don't worry, those songs won't be missing from the big box set. The track listings above are for the various highlights releases. The complete* box's track listing hasn't yet been published anywhere.
* minus one song from Sha Na Na and two from Jimi Hendrix
Phil Cohen says
One of the songs by Sha Na Na was not captured complete on tape. As for Jimi Hendrix's performance, this was by the 6-piece group with 2nd guitarist Larry Lee (an old army buddy of Hendrix's), and, as always, Janie Hendrix has to be a prima donna & killjoy and prohibits the official release of the two songs featuring Mr.Lee's vocals (Curtis Mayfield's "Gypsy Woman" & a Larry Lee original "Mastermind"). They are available unofficially, and while the performances are not brilliant, they are certainly acceptable. Mr.Lee's estate is being snubbed.
Michael says
Agree, so disappointing that still Larry Lee’s supporting songs didn’t get included. This is a sad and sorry omission and am sure Jimi would not approve!
Mark says
Musically speaking, Woodstock was a very mediocre festival. Some gems, but mostly a lot of meh/so-so performances. I speak from personal experience as I was at the festival (a 17 year old lad about to start college in September) and can say that I'd seen far better performances by many of acts on the schedule. Yes it was great fun, I tripped my skull out and balled my brains out. However, the conditions basically sucked and it was really a disaster area due in large part to poor logistical planning and the promoters not having a clue as to the volume of folks who would flock to see such a great gathering of so many top acts in popular music of that time. Time, as it usually does, has temporized the bad things about the festival and magnified the good ones with the result being that Woodstock has been somewhat overly aggrandized and memorialized. There were much better festivals in the '60s and '70s, both from a musical and operational standpoint. Being a physical music collector I thought about purchasing this set if only for historical, sentimental reasons until I saw the price...$799.99, are they out of their F-ing minds! Man, if we didn't realize it yet this most assuredly confirms that the Sixties are definitely over. Now if they were offering a box set of the complete performances of all the acts that performed at the Monterey Pop Festival in June of 1967, I might consider forking over this kind of cheddar. Though I wasn't at Monterey (too young and lived on the East Coast) I know people who were and to this day continue to wax nostalgic about a miraculous and magical experience it was. Frankly Monterey was really the premier Rock Festival of the 1960s and not Woodstock.
Arthur Michael Hogan says
Definitely overpriced, but if it was cheaper people would buy multiple copies then sell them online for $799.98 or probably more. So, hoping those people will be discouraged by this price and only those of us who truly want to own this collection will be its buyers.
