Rhino has announced plans for a new, 25th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition of Stone Temple Pilots' multi-platinum album Purple. The album was the group's second long-player, the follow-up to their Grammy-winning Core. While some bands struggle to capture any magic with their sophomore effort, Stone Temple Pilots delivered the goods with Purple.
Scott Weiland, Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz recorded the majority of Purple in Atlanta with Brendan O'Brien handling production duties. The album features some of the band's best-loved tracks including chart-toppers like "Interstate Love Song" and "Vasoline," both of which reached peak position on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart in 1994.
On September 13, Rhino will release a 3-CD/1-LP super deluxe box set that brings together a newly remastered edition of the classic album, plus unreleased rarities and alternate versions, and rare live tracks from the era. There are a number of early versions, demos, and acoustic takes of the beloved album tracks, along with a rare cover of Led Zeppelin's "Dancing Days," a previously unreleased demo of The Beach Boys' "She Knows Me Too Well," and an acoustic Christmas set that sees them performing an unplugged "Christmastime is Here" alongside tracks from Purple.
The third CD features a previously unreleased recording from Stone Temple Pilots' 1994 stop, captured on their New Haven, CT stop. The 17-song set includes both electric and acoustic material, many tracks from Purple, hits from Core and a number of covers, including Woody Guthrie's "Gypsy Davy" and David Bowie's "Andy Warhol."
In all, the box set tracks the development and assesses the legacy of one of Stone Temple Pilots' most enduring albums with remastered audio, copious demos, and a wealth of exciting live material. Pre-orders are open now for Rhino's super deluxe edition of Purple, due out on September 13. But superfans may want to note that Stone Temple Pilots' online shop is offering an exclusive, limited-edition bundle of the box set and a replica 7" single of "Interstate Love Song" b/w "Lounge Fly" on purple vinyl. A standard 1-CD jewel case edition featuring the new remaster is also set for release on September 13, alongside a 2-CD deluxe digipak version that pairs the remaster with the early versions, demos, and unplugged tracks from the big box.
