Catch Them If You Can: Classic Titles From The Dave Clark Five Land on Digital Services

July 29, 2019 By Sam Stone 38 Comments

FIVE ALBUMS + HITS COLLECTION AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD & STREAM

Fans of The Dave Clark Five have good reason to feel glad all over! The band was among the leaders of the British Invasion, with a flair for hit singles like "Glad All Over," "Because," and "Catch Us If You Can." But since their breakup in 1970, DC5 leader Clark (who holds the rights to their discography) has been reticent about revisiting the band's era-defining music. This means that their wealth of music has largely gone un-mined by the majors in the reissue era, outside of the excellent 1993 compilation, The History of The Dave Clark Five and the more recent 28-track collection, The Hits. So imagine the surprise last week when remastered editions of six DC5 albums appeared on digital platforms!

Each title been newly remastered and are licensed to BMG UK by Dave Clark himself. There's the 1964 Epic album Glad All Over, featuring the classic "Bits and Pieces," their reading of the doo-wop standard "Stay," and, of course, the title track that famously overtook The Beatles' "I Want To Hold Your Hand" at the top spot of the U.K. singles chart. American Tour is also present, alongside Catch Us If You Can (1965), Coast To Coast (1965), and Everybody Knows (1967). The career-spanning collection The Hits has also been newly remastered and added to digital platforms. Originally released in 2008, its 28 tracks (including the previously unreleased "Universal Love") serve as a comprehensive look at their key tracks.

While we hope that more albums will be added and hopefully released on physical media in the near future, the digital roll-out finally fills a void and celebrates one of the great talents of the British Invasion era. You can find track listings and links to download and stream below!

These have been on iTunes for years along with most of the rest of their 60s output. Good to see them streaming. Hopefully they'll add the rest soon. There is a LOT of filler on DC5 albums but there are also some hidden gems. My favorite album cut that isn't on compilations is "I'll Never Know" from Weekend In London which is on iTunes but so far not Spotify. Hopefully that will change soon!

These are new 2019 remasters which were just released last week as part of Clark’s new agreement with BMG. Agreed that hopefully more is to come!

I just checked on itunes (Canada) and while you say the albums are 2019 remastered versions, when you click on the album it gives a copyright year of 2009 or 2010. So how is one to know if indeed they are the "new" versions? For the moment I will just sit and wait for awhile for a CD release. In the best of situations they could put BOTH the stereo and mono versions on one CD. But I suppose the chances of that happening are slim and none.

I can't speak for the Canadian store, but in the U.S., the albums come up with "2019 Remaster" marked on every track, with a copyright year of 2019 and the line: ℗ 2019 Dave Clark (London) Limited under exclusive license to BMG Rights Management (UK) Limited

On Amazon U.S., the release date reads "July 19, 2019" with each track and album also marked as "2019 Remaster." Perhaps these haven't been uploaded to other territories yet?

      The exception to that is
"Sometimes" from American Tour, which shows the
credit as Clark-Ryan. At least that's what the booklet
      with the cd has referenced.

    A couple of things:

    1. None of the original albums has its original track list. Clark has added and deleted tracks from all of them. I won't speculate on his motives, but others have.

    2. Remastered or not, all the early hits are still monaural, despite having been released in stereo back in the LP days.

Both of those things make this a hard pass for me. I personally think Clark's withholding these tracks from the market for so long, and his muddying of DC5 history, has drastically reduced the desirability of his music. I got the 1993 set, and see no reason to buy anything else.

In a few years all those of us who remember the DC5 when they were almost fab will go the way of Lawrence Welk or Liberace fans. Then who will buy?

      Dave's no spring chicken either.

I'd like to have a proper CD set as well.
Not too much shuffling around of tracks on the 2019 remastered album
"Catch Us If You Can". "When" and " Having A Wild Weekend" were not part of the 12 track UK album...I guess they're now considered "bonus" tracks!

    Why I won't buy this:
The albums aren't issued with their correct track listing.
The songs aren't in Mono, and they should be.
This isn't in CD format, as a deluxe box set, including an informative book and potentially more.
The Beatles, Family, The Kinks, Pink Floyd, The Pretty Things, The Rolling Stones, Roxy Music, Spooky Tooth, The Yardbirds and The Zombies got it absolutely right. Proper box sets, on CD, with well prepared books and more, accompanying their deluxe issues.
Mr. Dave Clark got it wrong. I'll save my money, until he does this properly. May I suggest, a deluxe CD box set called, The Dave Clark Five In Mono. I'd buy it, no hesitation, if the albums and singles are treated properly.

These are the only British bands or recording artists from the original 1964-1965 Invasion, that haven't given their music a proper, chronological box set treatment: Chad & Jeremy, The Dave Clark 5, Petula Clark, Donovan, Marianne Faithfull, Manfred Mann, Peter & Gordon.
In 2004, Sandie Shaw released her 4 CD, deluxe box set, Nothing Comes Easy. Every single she ever recorded, in correct, chronological order. One hundred and one tracks! A 64 page hardcover book, and every song receives informative descriptions, marvelously written by Ms. Shaw. Amazing, when you realize, this only covers the singles; not all of her albums. Back in the 60's, she had the extraordinary foresight to buy the rights to her entire catalogue. Thus, anything released with her name on it, she's personally approved and issued. The box set is, I can assure you, wonderful.
Mr. Dave Clark has essentially done all he can to bury the memory and legacy of The Dave Clark Five. I consider it willful sabotage. I'll buy the CD set, "All The Hits", next year. I truly wonder if I'll actually get to see and hear, "The Dave Clark Five In Mono", covering everything in chronological order. It doesn't exist because Mr. Clark has suppressed it, so far. Very, very strange, to see such apathy.

Most of the DC5 that's currently streaming is mono. No not all of it and no it's not in chronological order but I'm happy to have what is there. Hopefully eventually we'll get what you're asking for but for now, I'm glad to hear what's available.

I bought in the late 90's four CDs by DC5 with a couple of albums per disc plus numerous bonus. Made in Germany and Hungary. Very good sound to my ears... and 111 tracks! I never understood Mr. Clark politics about DC5's discography. And I don't understand either this unexpected and speculative move. I love DC5 and will keep to these rare editions. Mr. Clark, try to make me happy when I'm blue!

I can not for the life of me understand, how, Dave Clark, who seems to be in control of the catalogue, would "leave all that money on the table" by not having a proper sort of re-issue campaign. I just don't get it. Does anyone have a valid reason?

The article by Bronson is very interesting. New insights into Clark's reluctance to release his music. But the article got one thing wrong, and very wrong. Yes, I know Clark is CREDITED as songwriter (either as sole writer or with partial credit) on almost every DC5 song but in reality he had ZERO input on actually writing the music. Clark is no songwriter. A very talented and smart music entrepreneur but not as a songwriter. Don't take my word for it, there's plenty of information on who actually wrote the songs. You can start by researching Ron Ryan. He's the guy that wrote a lot of their early hits, such as Because and Anyway You Want It.

I just read an article on http://www.eveningexpress.co.uk that there is a"best of" album, called "ALL THE HITS" coming out January 2020, It's described as 28 of their worldwide hits, remastered (at the Abbey Road Studio), available in a few different formats:on cd with a 32 page booklet, digitally for streaming, and a TWO RECORD VINYL LP set.
It sounds a little like the 2008 cd "THE HITS", but it will be interesting to see the track listing 🙂

Dave must be reading our minds because in the recent issue of Record Collector he says "everything will be coming out over the next year or so-all the albums, the whole catalogue,20 or more British and American records, as well as a box set. I've
been remastering them all at Abbey Road studios."
He sure is keeping us on our toes!
I hope all the band members and their families or estates will be seeing some of the profits. In Mike's case, maybe a nice donation to a charity would be nice!

Everybody Knows that fans are waiting for the DC5 to release their catalog in a 2fer CD format with bonus tracks similar to the Beach Boys or Elvis legacy releases, which would make us Glad All Over; enough with these Bits and Pieces in digital format. We are Hurting Inside and keep saying this Over and Over. The DC5 doesn’t have to Try To Hard. Because, we know You Got What It Takes; then they can say Catch Us If You Can. Anyway You Want It; no, only a double CD will do. I would certainly Like It Like That.

Since 1993, I have studied and Analyzed the pattern of The Dave Clark Five Compact Disc Releases. An Interview with Dave from 2020 stated " I will release all the Albums individually one album every month, remastered and updated with modern Technology. Also, He said of a Boxed set coming............... Soon! So far, the official number of CDs have totaled to four: 1. Glad All Over Again ( Late 1992 ) 2. History ( Double Cd-1993 ) 3. The Hits (2008) to commemorate their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Latest 4. All The Hits (2020) with Universal Love missing on Track 16. My Guess if I'm right that these albums will now be physically available Worldwide on November of 2024 or November 2025 to coincide with The Christmas season and that's when You accumulate a lot of Sales. Hopefully, we get them by Digipak Format and not breakable Jewel boxes. I also know that the Cds will be here for a "Limited" time meaning the Single albums are good for a Four Year offer and the Box Set? Good for Two Years then Dave will Delete /pull them off the market. It'll be wise for all of us to save our Dollars now because if we miss it, it'll be gone for such a long time. My Suggestion for Mr. Clark: If he reads this Message - Please Include The Mono/Stereo version of each Album plus, It will be Great if we get updated liner notes and Photos for the Boxed/Box Set. Again, It is only an Opinion, hopefully It helps. Thank You Mr. Dave Clark in Advance!
