UPDATE WITH NEW RELEASE DATE: Lost For Words: Pink Floyd Looks Back on Gilmour Era In 'The Later Years: 1987-2019'

August 29, 2019 By Sam Stone 8 Comments

PRE-ORDER BOX SET FROM AMAZON.COM

EDIT: Due to production and logistical delays, the deluxe box set of 'Pink Floyd The Later Years' and the digital equvalent will be released on December 13, 2019. The highlights 2-LP / 1 CD package and the digital equivalent will keep the release date of November 29, 2019.

In a move that's sure to please fans of latter-day Pink Floyd, the band has announced a new, 18-disc multimedia box set due on December 13. The Later Years: 1987-2019, which celebrates the band's David Gilmour-led years. The era was one of great change that was met with great success. Between the studio albums A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987), The Division Bell (1994), and The Endless River (2014) and the live efforts Delicate Sound of Thunder (1988) and Pulse (1995), the band sold over 40 million records worldwide and sold out venues around the world on several elaborately staged tours. Pink Floyd's work in the studio and onstage is celebrated in style on The Later Years.

The massive, limited-edition set includes 5 CDs, 2 vinyl singles, 5 DVDs and 6 Blu-ray discs packed full of Floydian treasures. Among them are new stereo and surround sound remixes, highly sought-after restored live performances from Venice 1989 and Knebworth 1990, recently unearthed outtakes and extras, a new look at a classic album, and two newly minted singles featuring unreleased live material. In addition, the set will include exclusive reproductions of posters and tour memorabilia, and two deluxe books -- one for photos and another for lyrics -- designed by Aubrey Powell at Hipgnosis and Peter Curzon of StormStudios! If that's just a little too much, a 2-LP/1-CD highlights collection is set for release on November 29 collecting 12 key tracks -- live material, jams, rehearsals, and new mixes among them. The CDs in the 18-disc audiovisual excavation are contained in a 60-page, hardback book which contains a table of contents, track lists, and an exhaustive guide to the content on the discs -- and there is plenty!

On the audio front, the star of the box is a newly created re-envisioning of A Momentary Lapse of Reason. The original 1987 album has gained a reputation among some as a timepiece of the synth-laden '80s. Some Floyd fans have even gone as far as to say that it's practically a David Gilmour solo album, owing to the electronic drum machines and infrequent Richard Wright appearances on the original. The remixed and updated 2019 edition presents a new, more unified vision of the album by utilizing keyboard parts by Richard Wright (some flown in from live performances) and new overdubs from drummer Nick Mason. Years in the making, the new edition makes its debut on The Later Years.

Following the success of A Momentary Lapse of Reason, Gilmour, Wright, and Mason embarked on an 11-week promotional tour of the U.S. and Canada. The tour was extended throughout 1988 and 1989 with performances in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and Japan. The tour was commemorated in 1988 with the Delicate Sound of Thunder double album, which has been remixed and expanded to include 40 minutes more material. Pink Floyd also closed out the Knebworth Festival in 1990, joined by Clare Torry, who lent her voice to "The Great Gig in the Sky" as she had on Dark Side of the Moon in 1973. The Knebworth concert will make up one of the CDs in the box. A further disc of rare live material is also included, featuring a trio of tracks from Atlanta 1987, a go at "Astronomy Domine" from Miami 1994, and a take on "One of These Days" from Hannover the same year.

Pink Floyd's unreleased studio work from the era also gets a turn in the spotlight alongside those rare live recordings. There's a jam on "Marooned," an early version of "High Hopes," and tantalizing titles like "David's Blues," "Rick's Theme," "Nervana," and "Slippery Guitar."

PRE-ORDER 1-CD FROM AMAZON.COM

Meanwhile, the video material on The Later Years will be available on both Blu-ray and DVD. Each disc is housed in a gatefold wallet with dedicated cover art featuring classic Pink Floyd iconography and new designs. The discs themselves will be contained in protective sleeves inside the wallets. Among the bounty of video material is a restored and remixed version of the Delicate Sound of Thunder concert film, which has been transferred from the original 35mm film negative to 4K. The audio for the film has been remixed in stereo and surround, and the disc will include bonus features of related live footage that has never been seen before.

The Pulse film has also been restored and re-edited for The Later Years though the audio will be the same mixes that James Guthrie prepared for the 2005 DVD release. Further DVDs and Blu-rays include new high-definition transfers of hard-to-find concert footage from Pink Floyd's controversial concert in Venice in 1989 and their appearance at the Knebworth Festival in 1990. The latter has been re-edited and presented with new stereo and surround mixes.

There's also plenty of additional live footage, including outtakes from Delicate Sound of Thunder, 1994 rehearsal footage, 19 screen films from 1987 and 1994, and an excerpt from Pink Floyd's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 (featuring a performance of "Wish You Were Here" with Billy Corgan.) The compilation producers have also unearthed a trove of unreleased or rarely seen video -- from album cover photo shoots for Momentary Lapse and Division Bell, a TV ad for Pulse, interviews, press conferences, EPKs, and behind-the-scenes tour footage, to an unreleased 50-minute feature on The Endless River directed by frequent collaborator Ian Emes, there's plenty for fans to feast on!

Exclusive to the Blu-ray format is a disc of surround sound and hi-resolution stereo mixes of A Momentary Lapse of Reason (2019 version), The Division Bell (in its 2014 stereo and surround mixes), and The Endless River (featuring its original 2016 stereo and surround mixes). The seven unreleased rehearsal and studio recordings from 1994 will also be given the surround and hi-res treatment -- a move that's sure to delight audiophile collectors.

If that wasn't enough, The Later Years will include two 7" singles in newly designed picture sleeves: an unreleased live version of "Lost For Words" from the Pulse tour rehearsals recorded at Earl's Court in 1994, and a further unreleased live take on "Arnold Layne" from the three-man Floyd's 2007 reunion at a Syd Barrett tribute concert in London which is exclusive to the box.

The box is also chock full of memorabilia from the era. There's a set of reproduction tour programs for each tour the band staged (World Tour 1987/1988, Pink Floyd Live 1989, Pink Floyd European Tour 1994), plus replica tour passes, stickers, and posters, all presented in a prestige card envelope.

PRE-ORDER 2-LP FROM AMAZON.COM

If a massive box set seems like too much, Pink Floyd will release a more digestible 1-CD or 2-LP compilation of highlights from the set, also entitled The Later Years: 1987-2019. The LPs will be packaged in a deluxe gatefold sleeve alongside a 24-page book, the 1-CD collection will be similarly designed but smaller in scale, of course. Among its 12 tracks are highlights from Knebworth 1990, cuts from the new version of A Momentary Lapse of Thunder, newly remixed Delicate Sound of Thunder material, a previously unreleased early jam on "Marooned," and the as-yet-unheard rehearsal recording of "Louder Than Words" from Earl's Court, 1994.

Whether you purchase the two-disc compendium due November 29 or the 18-disc mega-set which has moved to December 13, you'll be treated to a veritable celebration of a sometimes-overlooked era in Pink Floyd history, complete with t-shirt bundles if you order from the Pink Floyd Online Store. To prepare us for the megaset, newly restored footage of "Wish You Were Here" from Knebworth 1990 has been posted on YouTube. The track has also been released on digital streaming services. You can enjoy the footage and place your pre-orders below!

Interesting that Division Bell isn’t included on CD. Was that issued separately already?

I was also curious about that, too. If I had to guess, I'd say that the Floyd camp didn't want to double up too much on material that was already issued on the last Division Bell box set in 2014.

If the Floyd camp didn't like "doubling up" why include five DVD's of material included on Blue Ray?

$474 is a lot. I really want this set, but it's really pricey. Division Bell should be included, even if it's just for to make the set definitive and complete. That price though...

Thankfully, The Division Bell album is accounted for somewhere, just not on CD. I'm glad the 5.1 mix that was previously only available on the Division Bell 20 box is going to be back in print. (And in hi-res on BluRay, no less -- a DVD version was available for a short time as a webstore-exclusive standalone.)

I’ve been waiting for years for “Delicate Sound of Thunder” tour to be released on DVD or Blu Ray. Why is it split up—partial on one, full on another? That’s really the only disc i’m Interested in, but for $475; no way.
