The major labels aren't the only ones who'll be part of Record Store Day Black Friday this year. A number of impressive indies (and other major labels with notable catalog friendly material) have announced exciting additions to the RSDBF slate. What's more, we've got coverage of some exciting new music from artists as diverse as Paul McCartney, Tank and the Bangas, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, and Norah Jones! First up...
Chuck Berry, Chuck Berry In London (Elemental)
By 1965, the British Invasion had brought Chuck Berry's name back into the rock and roll fore, and he responded with Chuck Berry in London. Most of the album was cut in London with accompaniment from the British R&B group The Five Dimensions, but Berry went back to his roots, too, recording some of the album in Chicago. Considered one of his best '60s albums, Chuck Berry in London is now back on vinyl for the first time in over 50 years in a new 180-gram edition! (2350 copies)
Cheap Trick, Gimme Some Truth (Cheap Trick Unlimited/BMG)
Legacy may be releasing a live album from New Year's Eve 1979, but the new year isn't all they'll be celebrating this RSD Black Friday. They're also releasing a single of "Gimme Some Truth" (a John Lennon cover from their latest album) backed with a live version of "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day" featuring Roy Wood, pressed on red vinyl. (1500 copies)
Patsy Cline, Sweet Dreams: The Complete Decca Masters 1960-1963 (Third Man)
One of the most exciting RSD BF releases from Jack White's Third Man Records is a deluxe vinyl edition of the essential box set first released on the Hip-o Select label back in 2010. Third Man's 3LP set collects all of the country legend's Decca sides, including "I Fall To Pieces," "Crazy," "Waling After Midnight," "Sweet Dreams (Of You)," and 47 others. For this limited-run/regional-focused release, the collection will be pressed onto pink, purple, and yellow pastel vinyl and presented in a newly designed tri-gatefold sleeve. (1000 copies)
Thomas Dolby, She Blinded Me With Science b/w One Of Our Submarines (Echo/BMG)
This special splatter color vinyl single brings together two of the most beloved songs from the electronic wizard - the #5 hit "She Blinded Me With Science" and the fan favorite "One of Our Submarines." (2500 copies)
Daryl Hall & John Oates, Home For Christmas (Friday Music)
The duo's 2006 holiday album debuts on vinyl (transparent red-colored vinyl, no less!) on this limited-run/regional release. Hear what made this the best-selling holiday album by any duo!
Ian and Sylvia, The Lost Tapes (Stony Plain)
The pioneering folk duo Ian and Sylvia, who have performed alongside Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, and many others, made some of the most important recordings of the folk revival. Earlier this year, Sylvia Tyson discovered a clutch of tapes recorded at an early '70s concert. Now, those 26 previously unreleased performances - including many songs that never made it onto a studio LP - make their debut on vinyl in an exclusive "RSD First" run release. (500 copies)
The JB's, More Mess On My Thing (Now-Again)
In 1969, Bootsy Collins and his band - who eventually became The JBs - recorded a demo to win over the bandleader. This landmark recording is now available on vinyl for RSD Black Friday, including the unreleased instrumental, "The Wedge," and the complete version of "When You Feel It, Grunt If You Can," which presents two never-issued songs in a 22-minute medley. All the music has been mixed by Mario Cadato directly from the original multitrack masters. It's accompanied by a large booklet with unseen photos and liner notes by historian Alan Leeds. This companion piece to the previously lost 1971 JBs album These are The JBs (released by the label in 2014) will be available on RSD BF in an "RSD First" edition, with a wider release to follow. And for the optical media lovers out there, you can pre-order the album on CD here. (2500 copies)
Norah Jones, I'll Be Gone (Blue Note)
Norah Jones will premiere brand-new music with her new RSD BF-exclusive single. The pair of tracks finds her collaborating with Mavis Staples on side one ("Ill Be Gone") and the rising star Tarriona "Tank" Ball of Tank and the Bangas on side two "Playing Along." (2000 copies)
The Kinks, Arthur b/w Brainwashed (Sanctuary/BMG)
On October 25, The Kinks' Arthur album will receive the deluxe edition re-evaluation it's long deserved. Just a few short weeks later, the 2019 remastered mono mixes of the album's standout tracks, "Arthur" and "Brainwashed," will be released for RSD. It marks the first time these tracks have been paired as a single and, if you're an Anglophile you want this colored vinyl edition with its Union Jack labels!
Huey Lewis and The News, Plansville (BMG Rights Management)
This RSD BF-exclusive single brings together two fan favorites from the band's most recent albums: "No Other Woman" from 2001's Plan B and Solomon Burke's "Got To Get You Off My Mind," as covered by Lewis on 2010's Soulsville. While the blurb on the RSD Black Friday page hypes unreleased content, there's no further information available about what differentiates these versions. Still, it's an exciting release for fans of later-period Lewis - especially as they gear up to release a new record in 2020.
Jenny Lewis, On The iPhone (Warner)
Jenny Lewis presents an intimate look at her creative process with a pair of iPhone voice memo demos for "Rabbit Hole" (from this year's excellent On The Line) and "Standing In The Doorway." (3000 copies)
Lizzo, Coconut Oil EP (Atlantic)
2019 has been Lizzo's year, thanks to a killer album (Cuz I Love You) and a surprise hit single (2017's "Truth Hurts," currently in its sixth week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100). This first-ever vinyl edition of her debut release (including the fan favorite "Good As Hell") is pressed on milky-white vinyl with a special coconut-scented insert! (5500 copies)
Nick Lowe & Wilco, Cruel To Be Kind (40th Anniversary Edition) (Yep Roc)
Nick Lowe's breakthrough hit "Cruel To Be Kind" is one of the gems of power pop. Now, to celebrate the song's 40th anniversary, Yep Roc will release a green 7" featuring the iconic track backed with a previously physically unavailable 2012 re-recording featuring Wilco. (Fear not, a download code is enclosed!) (3500 copies)
Madonna, I Rise Remixes (Boy Toy/Interscope)
You can groove to six remixes of Madonna's "I Rise" with this exclusive 12" EP. The original version appears on her latest album, Madame X.
Paul McCartney, Home Tonight b/w In a Hurry (MPL/Capitol)
Speaking of new music from certified legends, Paul McCartney has announced a 7" picture disc featuring two previously unissued songs. "Home Tonight" and "In A Hurry" are taken from McCartney's sessions for his latest album, Egypt Station. The Greg Kurstin-produced tracks will be pressed onto discs that feature artwork inspired by the parlour game Exquisite Corpse, alongside a printed lyric insert so you can sing along! (12,000 copies)
Anne-Sophie Mutter and John Williams, Across The Stars: Special Edition (Deutsche Grammphon)
For this special release, the legendary film composer conducts five movie themes from the Star Wars saga, newly adapted for violin superstar Anne-Sophie Mutter's newest album, released this summer. It's a perfect chaser to get ready for Williams' upcoming score to The Rise Of Skywalker, the ninth and final film in the space saga.
Katy Perry, Never Really Over/Small Talk (Capitol)
Norah, Macca, and Jenny Lewis aren't the only ones premiering new music for Record Store Day Black Friday. Katy Perry has announced the release of a double A-side 12" single featuring her latest hit, "Never Really Over" backed with the brand-new song "Small Talk."
Todd Rundgren, Bang Bang (Yep Roc)
As part of Yep Roc's ongoing series of Squeeze Swindles covers, Todd Rungren will release his take on "Bang Bang," a track that was famously nearly disowned by Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook. Maybe they'll prefer Rungren's "down-the-electropop wormhole" cover? Hear it for yourself on this exclusive 7" single.
Bruce Springsteen, Western Stars b/w The Wayfarer (Columbia)
The Boss's acclaimed latest album finds him taking on a cowboy-like character and incorporating influences like the '60s Hollywood sound to make what Esquire called "his best new work in a decade." Now, two highlights from the album will be pressed onto vinyl - the title track and "The Wayfarer" - exclusively for Black Friday
Steppenwolf, Steppenwolf (Sundazed)
Get ready for some heavy mono thunder, as Sundazed releases the first-ever reissue of Steppenwolf's self-titled album. The unique mix will be pressed on clear vinyl at RTI and is housed in a reproduction of the original silver foil jacket.
Tank and The Bangas, Live Vibes (Verve)
Tank and The Bangas have taken the music world by storm with their unique blend of funk, rock, jazz, rap, and spoken word poetry. The New Orleans-hailing band will release a live album recorded in their hometown for Record Store Day. (2000 copies)
Richard Thompson, The Cold Blue: Original Motion Picture Score (New West)
Earlier this year, Richard Thompson released his latest album: a soundtrack for a 2019 documentary on World War II called The Cold Blue. Thompson wrote and arranged the score and now it will arrive on vinyl for the first time in an exclusive blue vinyl, 180-gram double-album set. (1500 copies)
Various Artists, Jim Henson's Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas (Varese Sarabande)
The first press of the soundtrack to Jim Henson's Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas sold out when it was released as part of RSD BF last year. Now, Varese Sarabande gives listeners another chance at the album, with a new picture disc version of Paul Williams' beloved score to the TV special.
Various Artists, Joni 75: A Joni Mitchell Birthday Celebration (Verve)
We're Joni devotees here at The Second Disc, and if you are, too, you'll want to snag this special release. Joni 75 was a two-day tribute concert that became a film and was released on CD and DVD earlier this year. On Record Store Day Black Friday, just a few short weeks after Joni celebrates her 76th, vinyl aficionados can enjoy the soundtrack to Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration with a double-LP set. The astounding tribute concert featured a hand-picked-by-Joni lineup of Brandi Carlile, Glen Hansard, Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Chaka Khan, Diana Krall, Kris Kristofferson, Los Lobos with La Marisoul and Friends, Graham Nash, James Taylor, Seal, Rufus Wainwright, and more. This "RSD First" edition will be presented in a deluxe gatefold sleeve. A wider international release will follow. (3000 copies)
Various Artists, The Matrix Reloaded: The Album / The Matrix Revolutions: Music From The Motion Picture (Maverick/Warner Sunset)
With a fourth Matrix film on the way, now's the time to revisit the soundtrack to the 1999 sci-fi classic's sequels, released back-to-back in 2003. Featuring of-the-period dance beats as well as score from composer Don Davis, each is pressed on colored vinyl (3LP transparent green for Reloaded and 2LP coke-bottle green for Revolutions) and features an etching on the last side of each disc. (1500 copies each)
Hank Williams, The 1940 Recordings (BMG Rights Management)
The songs featured on this RSD Black Friday 45 are homemade recordings made by the country legend at just 18. Coupled with last year's 7" release, The First Recordings 1938, these releases represent the earliest-known recordings of Hank Williams. Newly restored and remastered by the Grammy Award-winning Hank Williams team who also brought us The Complete Health and Happiness Recordings!
