A defining classic of horror film and a late-period Spielberg-Williams collaboration are just two of La-La Land Records' recent archival soundtrack releases.
The latest in the label's Universal Pictures Film Music Heritage Collection is rescued elements from a soundtrack that's more than 80 years old: Franz Waxman's score to The Bride Of Frankenstein. One of the first critically acclaimed blockbuster sequels, Bride continued the story of Universal's 1931 adaptation of the iconic Mary Shelley novel. Director James Whale and stars Colin Chive and Boris Karloff return as Dr. Henry Frankenstein and his reanimated (but nameless!) monster, having survived the finale of the original film. Again, Frankenstein (this time with the help of mentor Doctor Pretorius, played by Ernest Theisger) attempts to create life through questionable science, culminating in the creation of a mate for the monster (memorably portrayed by Elsa Lanchester). Waxman's score was crucial in establishing what Hollywood soundtracks sound like, and this premiere release presents a fair majority of the original recording, sourced from acetates housed in the Waxman archive at Syracuse University along with elements recovered by producer Mike Matessino. Frank K. DeWald has penned liner notes for this title, which includes commentary from the album's associate producer (and the composer's son), John Waxman. This landmark release is limited to 3000 units.
LLL moves from Gothic horror to futuristic sci-fi with a new expanded edition of John Williams' score to Steven Spielberg's Minority Report. Based on a Philip K. Dick short story, the film depicted a futuristic Washington, D.C. where "pre-cogs" - all-seeing psychics - can predict crimes before they're committed. Tom Cruise plays a police officer whose faith in the system is shaken when his name comes up as the next criminal. Arguably one of Spielberg's best late-period works, Minority Report is infused with a tense score by Williams that offers his signature orchestra touch with a helping of electronics. As is custom with Spielberg-Williams titles, Matessino serves as producer, masterer and editor under Williams' own supervision and approval; Jeff Bond has written this set's liner notes and Jim Titus brings his style to the packaging. This 2CD set tops out at 3500 units.
Next, it's another entry in the label's exciting titles devoted to the work of Quinn Martin Productions, the television company behind hits like The Fugitive and Cannon. This time, it's score from The Invaders, a two-season potboiler about an unassuming architect's quest to stop an alien invasion. Original score tracks from the show, composed by the likes of Dominic Frontiere, Duane Tatro, Richard Markowitz, Irving Gertz and Sidney Cutner and immaculately preserved from original recording elements, are presented here across two discs - some two-and-a-half hours of classic TV music! Jon Burlingame produces and writes liner notes, Doug Schwartz masters and Dan Goldwasser provides package design on this set, limited to 2000 units.
There's one other recent La-La Land title worth noting in light of the approaching Halloween season: the premiere release of Graeme Revell's score to Child's Play 2. Another entry in the Universal Pictures Film Music Heritage Collection, this 1990 film featured the return of Chucky, the doll possessed by a psychopathic murderer (played by Brad Dourif). The hit horror series has spanned seven films from 1988 to 2017, plus a remake that opened earlier this summer. Revell was near the start of his career with Child's Play 2, and the New Zealand born composer's rich orchestral score set the tone for more solid action and horror films in his discography, including The Crow, Bride Of Chucky (the fourth entry in the Child's Play series), Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Freddy Vs. Jason. Matessino produces, masters and edits; Zach Tow pens liner notes (featuring a new interview with Revell) and Goldwasser designs the package. It's limited to 3000 units.
