Happy New Year, everybody!
2020 is shaping up to be a great year for Real Gone Music. There's the upcoming standalone version of Johnny Mathis' The Island, the return of Laura Nyro's More Than A New Discovery in mono...and that's just the Second Disc Records slate so far! In addition to titles from Rod McKuen and Barbara Eden, Real Gone has also announced remastered vinyl editions of Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band's enduring Express Yourself and It's Just A Matter of Time, a 1972 classic by Bobby Patterson which will arrive in the new year, just as January turns to February.
Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band's "Express Yourself" was an inescapable hit when it was released in 1970 on the album of the same name, and fifty years on the song continues to reach new audiences through sync deals and samples. But there's more to the Express Yourself album than that delectable slice of funk. From the Philly-inspired "Love Land," the grooving "I Got Love," the bold two-part jam "High as Apple Pie," and more, Express Yourself us an adventurous touchstone of psychedelic funk and soul. For their new reissue, Real Gone has brought in Mike Milchner at SonicVision to remaster the music from original tape sources. The result has been pressed onto brown vinyl and will be limited to only 750 copies, so place those orders quickly and mark your calendars for January 31!
If you like Charles Wright, you'll definitely want to hear Bobby Patterson's It's Just A Matter of Time, due out on February 7. Dallas native Patterson is a legend of Texas soul. Though he may not have risen to the heights of his contemporaries, he's produced Chuck Jackson, Fontella Bass, and Little Johnny Taylor. Stepping in the spotlight on his own, Patterson released It's Just A Matter of Time on the Paula label in 1972, featuring 12 exemplars of soul in all its flavors. The press release boasts funky jams, romantic balladry, socially conscious wah-wah-drenched commentary, and James Brown-style workouts -- nearly all written by Patterson. For its first LP reissue in decades, Real Gone has pressed the album on purple vinyl, housed in a replica of the original album art (complete with lyric insert). The new edition is limited to just 700 copies and it's a must for soul connoisseurs, so act soon!
