All I Ever Wanted: Depeche Mode Announce Definitive Studio Collection On CD

January 16, 2020 By Joe Marchese 10 Comments

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Following a series of box sets collecting its 12-inch singles, pioneering English electronic band - and 2020 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees - Depeche Mode have announced a definitive survey of their studio works.  The limited, numbered MODE is due on January 24 from Rhino/Warner (in the U.S.) and Sony (in the U.K.).  The 18-CD collection rounds up all fourteen of Depeche Mode's studio albums plus four additional discs of bonus material.  In total, MODE features 63 non-album singles, B-sides, and bonus tracks spanning 1983-2017 including the previously unreleased "Heroes (Highline Session Version)."

All fourteen original albums in MODE, from 1981's Speak & Spell through 2017's Spirit, are housed in newly-designed black sleeves.  The most recent remasters appear to have been utilized, including those first released on deluxe editions in 2006-2007.  The box also contains a 228-page, black, gilt-edged book with the complete lyrics as well as the original album artwork and photographs covering the band's entire career to date.

The lavish MODE arrives on January 24.  In addition to links, you'll find the track listing below, complete with discography for the four bonus discs!  And watch for Depeche Mode among this year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees at this year's ceremony, airing live from Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio, on HBO May 2 at 8 pm!

Was there any idea that this was coming? That's a quick turnaround on release dates.

Hi John! While the gap between announcements and release dates has been lessening recently, this was announced some time ago. We waited to have all of the information to print it here, which nicely dovetailed with the RRHOF induction.

I heard about this months ago. Not sure why this is news now.

With the announcement of the band’s induction into the RRHOF yesterday and the imminent release of the set, now seemed as good a time as any... 🙂

If the standard CD remasters from 2006/07 are being utilized, expect a more compressed sound than the original CD releases. Ironically LP remasters from that time period and more recent years have a superior DR, as do SACD versions from 06/07. Although the box seems promising due to all the rare material, squishing the DR on the original albums lessens the overall value.

Are any Canadian retailers carrying this? Amazon just has a sign up for when it's available… but when I contacted the company, the person who responded said it's not confirmed they will actually be carrying it for release time.

Any idea what's going on with this release? It's nowhere to be found. I imagine it was limited edition, but it wasn't out for even a week. Amazon and Rhino have no news. I noticed on the Amazon UK site that it says "in stock February 15" but at a higher price point that it sold in the U.S. Could it be a manufacturing/distributor issue?

I got my copy last week from U.S. Amazon. I had preordered it in early January, well after the release announcement. Hopefully there will be more made available for those interested. Otherwise I may have quite the collector’s item.

I got mine, the packaging has a few issues. You'd think for the money it wouldn't.
