Rhino has teamed up with the Grateful Dead online shop, Dead.net, to offer another box set that promises to be an illuminating and exciting look into another chapter of their live career. June 1976 is a 15-CD box set documenting 5 complete live shows from that month. The limited edition collection will be pressed up in 12,000 numbered copies, due out March 20.
After two years away from the stage, Grateful Dead returned to touring. Mickey Hart was back, the pricey and cumbersome Wall of Sound system was out, and the Grateful Dead were reinvigorated with an exciting new repertoire to draw from. The June 1976 box set puts listeners right in the middle of these shows, with five previously unreleased complete concerts: Boston Music Hall, Boston MA (6/10/76 and 6/11/76); Beacon Theatre, New York, NY (6/14/76 and 6/15/76); and Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ (6/19/76). Each has been sourced from the original two-track master tapes recorded by longtime engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson. Jeffrey Norman has remastered them for HDCD using the Plangent Process to properly restore and speed-correct these legendary tapes.
David Lemieux, Grateful Dead archivist and producer of the box set, remembers trading for cassette tapes of some of these 1976 shows. "The performances were magnificent, A+ Dead throughout," he said in a statement. "And the recordings were impeccable, crystal clear with a clarity to each instrument and vocal that was unlike any other tapes in my collection." He promises even the most ardent fans of live Dead will find something new to enjoy in June 1976. "Hearing these recordings mastered by Jeffrey is a whole new experience, newly discovered nuances to the sound, mix, and performances revealed on every song. We could not be happier with how it turned out..."
And with detailed liner notes by Jesse Jarnow and the usual impeccable packaging, this will be a box for Deadheads everywhere to treasure.
Pre-orders for June 1976 are now live on Dead.net. You can purchase merch bundles to go along with the box, or if you prefer digital, all five shows will be available in 16-bit/44.1kHz Apple Lossless or hi-res 24-bit/192kHz FLAC. No matter your preferred configuration, you'll gain access to special preview listening parties that will be unveiled over the coming weeks to whet your appetite for the big box.

Shaun says
Lots of other eras I’d like to see covered in a box set, such as The Ark (Boston 1969), or the full shows (Or however much exists in the vault) from Feb. 1970 at the Fillmore East.
Only parts of that historic Fillmore run have been released, and last year’s Allman Bros. box from the same dates (They shared the bill) leaves the GD organization with no excuses for releasing it all.
Alpine Valley 1989 (I was there!) would be another fantastic box, and yet another that fans have wished for many years now.
Having said all that, and while I wasn’t wishing for a 1976 box, this looks good. The Boston ‘76 shows are well regarded, so this might be worth it. For 15 CDs, the price isn’t bad at all.
