Today, April 3, would have been Doris Day's 98th birthday. Though she passed last year on May 13, her spirit remains very much with us. As we reflect on her singular life, and cherish her work as a singer, actor, humanitarian, and activist, we're thrilled to share some very special news about an imminent event and upcoming releases.
This weekend, an online auction will take place at Julien's Auctions including many clothing items from Doris' movies and television programs in addition to jewelry, artwork, furniture, trinkets, numerous awards - including Billboard, Cashbox, and Downbeat awards for Best Female Vocalist - plus Grammy nomination certificates, gold records, acetate discs, items from her personal record collection, and other treasured memorabilia from her career. The property and memorabilia auction is being held tomorrow and Sunday, April 4 and 5, with all proceeds to benefit The Doris Day Animal Foundation.
The beautiful 700+-page catalogue can be viewed here. To register to bid, please do so NOW at Julien's website: no later than 12 noon Pacific Time/3 pm Eastern Time. The deadline for bidding on the first half of the auction (lots 1-599) is this Saturday, April 4, at 6 pm Pacific/9 pm Eastern. The bidding deadline for the second half of the auction (lots 600-1099), is this Sunday, April 5, at 6 pm Pacific/9 pm Eastern.
That's not all. Next Friday, Sony Music U.K. will release a new vinyl LP. Her Greatest Songs features 16 of Doris' classics from 1948-1970 on pink vinyl. This new compilation draws on her classic Columbia recordings plus the vinyl debut of her rendition of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," recorded in 1970 for the 1971 CBS-TV special The Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff Special. The release of Her Greatest Songs will also be available on Friday for streaming and download. It can be pre-ordered now at Amazon U.K., but please note that Amazon U.K. is not currently shipping items to the United States as a result of COVID-19. We hope that this sanction will be lifted as soon as possible.
Her Greatest Songs joins the recent release from Craft Recordings of Doris' The Love Album on vinyl. Recorded over three sessions in May and June 1967, The Love Album found Doris delivering romantic versions of such classics as "For All We Know," "Street of Dreams," and "Are You Lonesome Tonight." This vinyl edition marks its debut in the format. Please watch this space for upcoming news of future Doris Day releases!
Now, we'd like to share a selection of rare photos of Doris from the 1950s (all courtesy of The Doris Day Estate) as well as a wonderful, new video tribute that's sure to bring a smile. You'll also find the full track listing for Her Greatest Songs below. Phil Cohen says
Make that "Amazon UK is not permitting Americans to order anything". It's a total embargo. At Amazon's companies in North America, The UK & Europe, (Indefinitely) their warehouses will not accept shipments of any products except food, pet supplies, cosmetics, scientific equipment & medical equipment. In all other product categories, Amazon's companies will not stock any forthcoming release products, nor will they re-stock when already released products go out of stock. Taken to its logical (but irrational) conclusion, Amazon's new policies will see Amazon exit from most product categories that it has sold over the years. For Amazon's competitors, who have long complained about the impossibility of competing again Amazon, it is a golden opportunity.
Amazon could still get by and be a profitable (but downsized) multinational company selling data services (e-books, Movie & Music streaming and Cloud Computer storage). And those products don't require warehouses, packaging materials or warehouse workers. That idea undoubtedly thrills Jeff Bezos.
Simply put, if Amazon won't sell us the products that we want, we will find other online dealers who will. As for those industries who manufacture a "Physical Product" and who permitted Amazon to become their biggest retail outlet, those industries now find themselves at Amazon's (lack of) mercy. Those industries will never make that mistake again! As for consumers, many will not forgive or forget Amazon's recent actions. I know that I won't.
I feel bad for you Joe. I'm aware that a small "cut" from purchases made through Amazon links on your site, is how you make a living. Amazon's companies (especially the UK one) are digging themselves deeper and deeper into a hole; a hole from which there is no face-saving way out.

Gee, not one word about sweet Doris Day in that tirade?
Harris Goodman says
Kevin, this is the same Phil Cohen who suggested on the John Prine thread that his “pre-existing conditions” somehow made his death from COVID-19 less tragic.
I’m gonna try to be compassionate here, though. My guess is that Mr. Cohen lives by himself (as do I) and that social distancing and everything going on in the world has made him cranky. Completely understandable.
To Phil: Sir, may I suggest setting aside a chunk of time during the day to get away from the computer and either read a real book, meditate, listen to music...etc. Seriously, I find that being away from the web for at least part of my day helps keep me sane during this awful time.
Wishing you much peace,
Harris Goodman
Michael Roberts says
Phil, you really need to chill out.
Amazon's current shipping policy is in place to address the shipment of essential items during this pandemic. The fact that you don't understand that we are in the midst of a global pandemic right now is just beyond words.
Online companies and shipping providers are trying to provide fast service & shipping for essential items.
As much as I love Doris Day, I truly don't believe a new Doris Day release is something that would be considered essential during this time.
