Manifesto Records is getting shell-shocked with the vinyl debut later this month of The Turtles' expanded original studio albums. Over six LPs released on White Whale Records between 1965 and 1970, The Turtles' sound epitomized the joyful and bright sound of sixties pop while gently sending it up in subtly subversive fashion. On June 26, Manifesto returns all six of those albums to vinyl as 2-LP sets remastered from the original tapes: the first three in mono/stereo editions, and the last three pairing the original album with bonus material.
Howard Kaylan, Mark Volman, Don Murray, Al Nichol, Chuck Portz, and Jim Tucker formed the original band; later, Jim Pons and Johnny Barbata would replace Portz and Murray in the lineup. (Chip Douglas of The Modern Folk Quartet and The Monkees fame had a brief stint in the band, too.) They worked with some of the era's most notable producers including Douglas, Bones Howe, Joe Wissert, and The Kinks' Ray Davies and recorded songs by P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, Harry Nilsson, Warren Zevon, Carole King and Gerry Goffin, and Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon.
A quintessential California group, The Turtles notched a string of effervescent hits. Their nine U.S. top 40 singles encompassed Sloan and Barri's "Let Me Be" and "You Baby," Kaylan and Volman's "Elenore," Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe," Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark's "You Showed Me," and an unforgettable quartet of melodic tunes from Bonner and Gordon: the chart-topping "Happy Together," "She'd Rather Be with Me," "You Know What I Mean," and "She's My Girl." But the Turtles' singles only hinted at the treasures that could be found on their albums which trace the band's development from folk-rockers to sunshine pop purveyors to merry musical pranksters. (And that's hardly all; The Battle of the Bands found the group taking on various identities as they jumped from genre to genre in an irreverent mock showdown.) Howard Kaylan's original songwriting also got a chance to shine on the LPs, resulting in some of the group's most memorable recordings. Zappa fans, too, will find on The Turtles' albums the roots of the subversive pop stylings Kaylan and Volman brought to The Mothers of Invention as well as to their own subsequent duo recordings as Flo and Eddie.
All six studio albums will be reissued in gatefold jackets as two-record sets:
- It Ain't Me Babe (1965) (Mono/Stereo)
- You Baby (1966) (Mono/Stereo)
- Happy Together (1967) (Mono/Stereo)
- The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands (1968) plus 11 bonus tracks
- Turtle Soup (1969) plus 12 bonus tracks
- Wooden Head (1970) plus 13 bonus tracks
The bonus material includes demos, singles, alternate versions, radio spots and more. These track listings mirror the CDs issued by Manifesto in 2016 as The Complete Original Album Collection. The 2017 U.K.-only, Record Store Day-exclusive vinyl box set The Albums Collection in 2017 contained all six albums (the first two in mono, the remaining four in stereo) with no bonus tracks. These deluxe Manifesto vinyl reissues mark the return of these LPs to print in the United States.
Timeless pop doesn't get much more delectable than on The Turtles' original albums. Look for all six from Manifesto on June 26. We've got the track listings and pre-order links below!

Demetrio says
I have the expanded CD version and the singles set. Excellent! Regarding the first two titles, it's good to have the mono because the stereo is atrocious--as bad as the early Beatles recordings. Mono rules.
