Last week, Cash Money Records founders (and New Orleans natives) Bryan "Birdman" and Ronald "Slim" Williams donated $225,000.00 to help the COVID-19 relief effort. Their donation was intended to help residents of the Big Easy pay their rents as they continue to cope with the devastation of the virus. Indeed, a social conscience has always been at the forefront of Cash Money's ethos; the donation was the Williams' second such contribution for coronavirus relief. Every year, they also sponsor the efforts in New Orleans of The Johnny and Gladys Williams Foundation. Named for their parents, the foundation sponsors annual Thanksgiving dinner giveaways with free health screenings.
Cash Money's influence on the fabric of hip-hop culture can't be understated; in the late 1990s and early 2000s, producer Mannie Fresh defined the sound of southern hip-hop with his groundbreaking work for the label. Now, Cash Money (currently affiliated with Universal Music Group) is looking back on some of its greatest triumphs with a new 2-LP (standard and colored vinyl) compilation due on June 19.
Cash Money: The Instrumentals collects 23 such instrumental tracks on digital platforms and 19 on vinyl. Many of these seminal cuts from the label have never before appeared on either format. Expect to hear crossover Hot 100 hits like Juvenile's "Back That Azz Up" (the uncensored version of the No. 19 entry "Back That Thang Up") featuring Lil Wayne and Mannie Fresh; Birdman and Lil Wayne's No. 21 "Stuntin' Like My Daddy;" and Big Tymers' No. 11 "Still Fly;" among other key tracks from Lil Wayne, Cash Money Millionaires, Hot Boys, and BG.
Bryan "Birdman" Williams (a.k.a. "Baby") and Ronald "Slim" Williams' label has notched sales of over 100 million records since its founding 29 years ago. Cash Money has been home to 12 chart-toppers on the Billboard 200 and seven No. 1 singles on the Hot 100 from artists such as Drake, Juvenile, Jay Sean, and Lil Wayne. Cash Money: The Instrumentals is a journey through many of the label's landmark accomplishments that rippled through the realms of hip-hop and pop. The standard black vinyl edition will be available everywhere on June 19 while the colored variant will be available exclusively through uDiscoverMusic (although links haven't yet appeared). The expanded digital version is already available now at all digital service providers. You'll find the track listing and pre-order links below!
