Hopes Up: Real Gone Presses Up Soul Asylum's "Let Your Dim Light Shine" and Man's Overlooked "Revelation"

On July 31, Real Gone Music will present two more hidden gems on vinyl.  This pairing includes Soul Asylum's Let Your Dim Light Shine, an alt-rock success returning to vinyl for the first time in 25 years, and prog rock outfit Man's Revelation, an ambitious concept album from 1969.

As a follow-up to Soul Asylum's breakthrough Grave Dancers Union, the 1995 effort Let Your Dim Light Shine saw the band under pressure to deliver.  Here, they established themselves as a more radio-friendly band - thanks in no small part to the sonic fingerprint of Butch Vig - but they still explored stylistic possibilities that bordered on the experimental.  Lyricist Dave Pirner provides more introspection than fans had seen before on their earliest albums and, while not as critically lauded as Grave Dancers Union, Let Your Dim Light Shine is well worth returning to.  Real Gone will release the first-ever vinyl reissue of Let Your Dim Light Shine pressed on striking coke bottle clear vinyl with blue swirls and packaged in a sleeve that replicated the original release.  This special pressing is limited to just 700 copies, so don't wait.

On the same day, the overlooked 1969 prog-rock epic Revelation by Man will hit shelves on purple vinyl, limited to 1,000 copies.  The ambitious concept album attempted to tell the story of mankind, exploring the creation of the universe, birth, love, loneliness, space travel, and - in a move that's still startling 50 years later - sex.  Musically, it has all the trademarks of late-'60s psych: swirling organs, a wealth of effects that are more gimmicky than effective, Hendrix-like leads, and plenty of freak-outs.  Along the way, you'll hear shades of Deep Purple, early Jethro Tull, Traffic, and even echoes of The Doors.  For the upcoming reissue (the first such one in the States) Real Gone has packaged the purple vinyl in a flipback sleeve, echoing the presentation of the original Pye issue.

So whether you're into radio-friendly alt-rock, or rather radio-unfriendly prog, Real Gone will have what you need on July 31.  Find more details and order links below!

Sam Stone

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day. Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.
