Over thirty years ago, The Rolling Stones staged a show that would become one of the band's most renowned. The Atlantic City '89 concert, which took place on December 19, 1989 at the city's Convention Hall, was special for a number of reasons, but the main draw of the show was the special guests involved, who seemed to represent the past, present, and future. For this special show, The Stones called on their idol, John Lee Hooker for "Boogie Chillen," brought up their contemporary Eric Clapton for another blues standard "Little Red Rooster," and were joined by Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin of Guns N' Roses for "Salt of the Earth." It's just one of the reasons this dazzling concert is so special.
Now Steel Wheels Live: Atlantic City, NJ has been restored and will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, vinyl, and in a special box set with exclusive material. It's all due on September 25 from Eagle Rock Entertainment.
As has become the case for these special Live From The Vault releases, Steel Wheels Live: Atlantic City, NJ will arrive in a number of configurations. The biggest is a limited-edition 6-disc box set. In it you'll find the complete Atlantic City concert on 2 CDs, plus a bonus CD of rare performances from the tour. Though not particularly heavy in content, the bonus CD features a handful of strong performances from Toronto and London in 1989. The Japan edition of the box set will include a bonus interview track, taken from a 1989 promo CD. This is not available in any other territories. But regardless of your region, you will find the Atlantic City show on DVD and standard-definition Blu-ray, and an exclusive bonus DVD: Steel Wheels Live Tokyo, Japan featuring a complete show from the Tokyo Dome on February 24, 1990. That Tokyo show was formerly a Japan-only product, previously released as part of the DVD set From The Vault Extra - Live In Japan - Tokyo Dome 1990.2.24. It sees international release here for the first time. It's all housed in a 10"x 10" hard slipcase, with a 40-page hardback book and gatefold disc-holder.
For those who prefer a slimmer collection, 2-CD/DVD and 2-CD/Blu-ray configurations will also be available, featuring the complete Atlantic City show in audio and video formats. Meanwhile, if you just want the concert film, it will be released on DVD and Blu-ray. Finally, for the vinyl enthusiasts, the concert will be released as a 4-LP set, available on standard black vinyl or on orange and blue vinyl (currently available in the U.S. from The Rolling Stones' Official Shop, though an Amazon link may be on the way).
No matter how you choose to enjoy it, the concert is sure to please. From the hits-filled setlist, the spectacular stage show, the deep cuts, and special guests, it's a highlight of the tour. And if you can't get enough Steel Wheels-era Stones, the band is also set to release a double A-sided 10" picture disc for Record Store Day Drop 2 on September 26. The disc features "Rock and a Hard Place" (Live from Atlantic City) and "Almost Hear You Sigh" (Live from Tokyo Dome) and will be available only at participating record shops. Does anyone know if the deluxe edition includes the appearance by Jeff Beck at one of the Stones shows at the Los Angeles Coliseum during this tour (October-November 1989)? I cannot recall the tune he performed with the band, however...
