Though they've been separated personally and professionally for almost four decades, Richard and Linda Thompson are still recognized as one of the most significant musical duos of their generation. Fairport Convention co-founder Richard first teamed with Linda as a member of folk-rock group The Bunch, releasing one album in 1972; in October of that year, they became husband and wife. From a purely musical standpoint, the marriage of guitarist-songwriter Richard to vocalist Linda was a completely felicitous one. Between 1974 and 1982, the Thompsons released six studio albums on the Island, Chrysalis, and Hannibal labels. Now, all of those LPs have been collected along with two discs' worth of bonus material on a new box set from UMC (U.K.).
Out now in the U.K. and available tomorrow - Friday, September 18, in the U.S. - Hard Luck Stories (1972-1982) promises to be the definitive chronicle of a decade of music from Richard and Linda Thompson featuring a total of 113 songs including 30 previously unreleased tracks. The box has been curated by Richard and Linda, and compiled and mastered by Andrew Batt (Bobbie Gentry's The Girl from Chickasaw County, The Delta Sweete: Deluxe Edition). It follows the reissue earlier this year of the Thompsons' first three albums for Island Records in new 180-gram vinyl editions.
The box set contains expanded editions (with B-sides, demos, rarities, non-album singles, and more) of the following albums:
- I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight (1974)
- Hokey Pokey (1974)
- Pour Down Like Silver (1975)
- First Light (1978)
- Sunnyvista (1979); and
- Shoot Out the Lights (1982)
In addition, the box premieres two new collections. Sometimes It Happens - The Early Years brings together 14 rarities including two previously unreleased cuts. This disc features tracks from The Bunch ("The Loco-Motion," "My Girl the Month of May," and an unissued alternate of "Sweet Little Rock and Roller"), Linda's solo demos and her appearances on albums by Richard and Brian Patten, a demo of "When Will I Be Loved" with Linda and Sandy Denny, a pair of live tracks from 1972-1973, and the previously unheard "Amazon Queen." The second bonus disc, The Madness of Love - Live, has nine unreleased tracks and two new remixes. Six tracks are from the duo's Queen Elizabeth Hall performance of April 25, 1975, with a further five from Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on May 1, 1977.
Hard Luck Stories promises to be a lavish collection, boasting a 72-page hardcover book with previously unpublished photographs from Gered Mankowitz, Keith Morris, and Penny Smith, as well as images from the artists' archives. Liner notes have been penned by Patrick Humphries (author of Richard Thompson: The Biography) and Mick Houghton (author of I've Always Kept a Unicorn, a biography of the late Sandy Denny). Both authors spoke to Richard and Linda in preparation for writing their notes.
The Thompsons' groundbreaking albums are not only cornerstones of the folk-rock genre but remain as powerful today as when originally released. Hard Luck Stories (1972-1982) celebrates both of their ever-resonant voices and places their formidable body of work in context. It's due from UMC stateside on Friday. You'll find pre-order links and the full track listing below. Note that there have been reports of difficulty ripping some of the CDs in the box as well as playback issues. We've reached out for comment and will update this story accordingly once received.

Philip John Birtwistle says
Sadly as you say, there seem to be a great many manufacturing faults on the discs. I have a 50% success rate so far and haven't even played them all. Hoping something gets sorted because otherwise this is a thing of beauty.
Lin says
Hi,
I was writing to ask what type of manufacturing faults are you finding? I was curious because I was thinking of buying this box set in the near future.
Where did you purchase your box set from and what it cost?
I am in the USA.
You mentioned you hadn't listened to all the discs yet. As of reading my message, have you been finding more problems with the discs? (If you have listened to the remaining discs)
Thank you,
Lin
P.S. How are all the insert pamphlets?
Philip John Birtwistle says
Tracks with dorp outs, a couple of the discs I've tried so far simply stopping playing half way through a song, apparently issues when ripping, although I haven't done that so can't confirm first hand. Package is beautiful, the hardback book enclosed is amazing.
Lin says
Will you be able to return the box set from wherever you bought it from?
(Due to some type of manufacturing problem) and nothing you did.
I mean, I am sure you had to pay quite a bit of money, and though the book is fine, you shouldn't have to accept a flawed set of CD'S. Even one being flawed is not acceptable and I hope you can return it for a new box set to be sent to you.
Philip John Birtwistle says
I don't see the point in returning to Amazon because they'll either refund me and I'll have to pay more next time than the excellent price I got, or they'll send me another likely dodgy copy. I'm hoping the label will sort something out.
Greg says
Greatly interested in this set but not until production issues are fixed and there's a way to guarantee receiving the new version.
Earl Cambron says
Will order only after quality control issues are resolved.
This set is possibly the archival release of the year!
L. Mar Hudson says
It’s no secret that this project has been an absolute manufacturing disaster. Could SD do a story about that and about if/how the label is seeking to make it right?
Joe Marchese says
As mentioned in the article, we've reached out for comment on the issues some are experiencing with this set.
David Belbin says
I've got most of this stuff two or three times so haven't bought it, but the friend who has promised to lend me his copy has had no issues with the sound. Thanks for the full tracklisting, which is useful. I found one mistake: Tracks 6-7 from Richard Thompson (Island, 1972) should read Henry the Human Fly by RT. The most notable omissions from the set are two tracks from Guitar/Vocal - a sublime, lengthly live Night Comes In and a marvellous duet on The Dark End of the Street. Seems very odd that these aren't there when much lesser tracks are.
David Belbin says
Correction. Dark End is on there. Presumably Night Comes In wasn't included because there is a different live version, but its omission is still annoying. I can be found on the extended 2004 CD of Pour Down Like Silver.
Kenneth Shurtluff says
I've made my way through disc 4. Discs 3 and 4 have numerous skip issues. Not real happy about that.
Phillip Walker says
I count myself as VERY LUCKY! My set is perfect in everyway. All discs play perfectly and rip with no problems whatsoever. Also no marks on the discs. I'm quite surprised and detest this 'cheap' way of storing discs in multi-disc sets. Slipping fragile discs into a cardboard slot is a recipe for disaster! I removed each disc with minute care and placed them into poly-lined inner sleeves. They still slotted back into the cardboard slots. Having ripped all the CDs I shall probably return to the actually discs infrequently. However, the book is a thing of beauty. According to Universal Music the box set is now completely sold out!
Lin says
I'm curious as to where most people are purchasing their box set from?
From record stores or other retail type stores? On Amazon? UK or USA Amazon or some other on-line source for ordering?
I live near a Barnes & Noble book & music store in California that I can walk to in 20 minutes so might try there as I have never ordered anything on-line before.
What is the average cost for this box set? I imagine that probably varies quite a bit but just trying to ge an idea of the range of costs from one place to another.
Thank you.
