Today, Pink Floyd announced the release of a standalone edition of their recently-remixed 1988 concert album and film, Delicate Sound of Thunder. Due on November 20, the film documents the David Gilmour-led lineup of Pink Floyd performing in support of A Momentary Lapse of Reason at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island.
The restoration team sourced their work from over 100 cans of original 35mm film negatives, which were transferred to 4K and newly re-edited by Barry Trickett under the direction of longtime Pink Floyd creative partner Aubrey Powell. Though this edit was previously available on The Later Years box set, this marks its standalone debut.
The sound has also been restored and completely remixed from the original multitracks by David Gilmour, Andy Jackson, and Damon Iddins. The film has been enhanced with an immersive 5.1 surround sound mix to complement the hi-res stereo soundtrack. Meanwhile, the new edition of the album contains eight tracks not available on the current standalone CD version (though these eight tracks premiered last year as part of the Later Years box set).
Though the planned worldwide screening of the film has understandably been postponed, you can bring home your own copy Delicate Sound of Thunder with your choice of several configurations. The 2CD edition features the 2019 remixes of the complete show in its proper sequence - all two hours and 21 minutes, totaling 23 songs - housed in a newly designed, six-panel digipak with a 24-page booklet. A 3LP set will also be released following the same sequence, marking the vinyl debut of 9 songs. Each 180-gram disc is housed in a card sleeve and comes packaged in a deluxe, die-cut slipcase alongside a large-format 24-page booklet.
Blu-ray and DVD configurations of the concert film will also be released, featuring a two-hour, 16-song cut of the show, greatly expanded from its original home video release. The packaging for each video configuration includes a slip case with die-cut circle revealing a shot of the band onstage. Like the other configurations, it comes with a 24-page booklet.
For those who don't want to enjoy the show piecemeal and want something extra, Pink Floyd has announced an expanded box set edition featuring the concert on two CDs, plus a Blu-ray and DVD each with five bonus tracks not on the standard editions which made their debut on The Later Years. The package evokes that of The Endless River, with a lift-off lid box, a 40-page booklet, a double-sided poster, and five postcards of the band.
