Daft Punk's scintillating electronic score to TRON: Legacy is coming back to vinyl for its 10th anniversary with a lavish edition courtesy of the Mondo label.
The label lists this release as one of their "holy grails," and they've spared no expense in celebrating it. This 2LP, 180-gram release, pressed on blue/white and red/black vinyl, features the original soundtrack program along with seven bonus cuts that didn't make the original CD release. (As was standard a decade ago, they were divided among deluxe editions and even digital accounts - though they first appeared together on a Disney-pressed double vinyl edition not long after the original release.) Designer Matt Taylor has created eye-popping artwork for the gatefold jacket - including a colorful character collage for the cover and an inner image of Daft Punk - as well as a spot-varnished, die-cut O-card that features the marquee for Flynn's Arcade and a laser-outlined arcade cabinet.
"When we go to visit the offices at Disney Music once a year, and every time we go the team is very, very lovely and they go, 'So what's your dream list?'" Mo Shafeek, Mondo's creative director of music, told Collider. "TRON was always on that list." It's not hard to understand why: the French electronic duo were a perfect match for the film's dazzling future aesthetics. Working with a full orchestra, they fleshed out a series of synthetic themes that recalled Wendy Carlos' score to the 1982 original while establishing a musical language all its own. (The pair even made cameos in the film as - what else? - a pair of virtual DJs in their iconic robot helmets.)
Disney's unlikely sequel to the cult sci-fi hit continued the story of Jeff Bridges' effortlessly cool programmer Kevin Flynn. This time, his son (played by Garrett Hedlund) attempts to unlock the mystery of his father's disappearance decades ago, finding himself on the virtual Grid his parent created. Along with a mysterious program played by Olivia Wilde, the Flynns seek to free control of the digital world from CLU, a once-heroic avatar played by a digitally de-aged Bridges. Fans loved TRON: Legacy, making it a cult classic all its own - and Disney is reportedly working on a third film to star Jared Leto (who will also co-produce).
The new TRON: Legacy vinyl will go on sale at Mondo's official webstore at 12 p.m. CST, and is expected to ship in November.
