This Friday, two new box sets will celebrate the legacy of the late Amy Winehouse across vinyl and CD. 12 x 7: The Singles Collection and The Collection (both currently available in the U.K.) will respectively collect all of the late British singer's A- and B-sides on 12 pieces of vinyl and her three studio albums on CD alongside a live concert and remix collection previously unreleased in the format. (A 2015 vinyl variant of the album-focused The Collection included those same studio and live albums with a different compilation of rarities.)
Included on 12 x 7 are singles like the Ivor Novello winners "Stronger Than Me," "Rehab," and "Love Is a Losing Game." Its twelve singles - totaling 23 sides (as Disc 12, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," doesn't have a B-side) - encompass both Winehouse's jazz-tinged/retro R&B originals as well as her interpretations of such classic songs as Carole King and Gerry Goffin's "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," Mort Garson and Bob Hilliard's "Our Day Will Come," and Leon Russell's "A Song for You." Also featured is her impassioned rendition of "Body and Soul" with Tony Bennett. Upon Winehouse's untimely passing at the age of 27 in 2011, Bennett remembered her fondly: "She was an extraordinary musician with a rare intuition as a vocalist, and I am truly devastated that her exceptional talent has come to such an early end. She was a lovely and intelligent person and when we recorded together, she gave a soulful and extraordinary performance. I was honored to have the opportunity to sing with her."
Indeed, Winehouse put body and soul into her small body of work. The upcoming CD iteration of The Collection presents both of the studio albums released in her lifetime, 2003's Frank and 2006's breakthrough Back to Black. The latter, still one of the U.K.'s best-selling albums, earned the singer her second Ivor Novello Award (the first was for "Stronger Than Me" on Frank), a Brit Award, and five Grammys - tying the record for the most wins in one night by a female artist and making her the first British woman to win five of the coveted trophies. Disc 3 has the posthumously-released Lioness: Hidden Treasures, which collected alternates, one-off covers, and collaborations with Bennett, Nas, and Back to Black producer Mark Ronson. The fourth CD has the audio from Winehouse's Shepherd's Bush concert of May 29, 2007, previously released on DVD only, and the fifth CD boasts remixes drawn from singles of "Stronger Than Me," "Back to Black," "You Know I'm No Good," "Love Is a Losing Game," and 11 more songs.
Look for 12 x 7: The Singles Collection this Friday, December 4. (Both titles are already available in Europe.) You'll find the track listing and pre-order links below.

The e-mail had an (erroneous) Kate Bush tag. Did that arise from the mention of Shepherd’s Bush?
Joe Marchese says
Wow, that's a new one to me, Kevin!

Hi. Any idea whether Amy Winehouse, The Collection, uses a good remastering? The original Back to Black CD was compressed and very loud. Thanks.
Larry Davis says
Sounds fine to me...I must have bought these records at least 4 times each, and none were compressed/too loud, it's how they were recorded...only 14-17 years ago?? Bought Frank as an import from Tower Records' clearance bin in 2005 on a hunch before Back To Black was released & dug it immensely...then B2B was released in 2006, bought that as an import cuz had no idea it would get a US release...Frank did not at the time...but it did, in 2007 and it knocked my socks off...and the buzz led to 2 brief US tours, and I did see & meet Amy at NYC's Bowery Ballroom (opening act was fun UK girlgroup The Pipettes) got pics & setlist & she was utterly charming & beautiful in person...almost got my stuff signed but didn't cuz first, before the show at sound check (where I met her), she was off to an interview & after the show, waited with a few fellow fans, typical, she was about to come out to sign and this idiot photographer paparazzi guy runs into the venue, freaks her out & she runs out into a waiting car!! Thought oh well, next time... there was no next time...drugs, visa problems, then she died in 2011...anyhoo, I rebought the 2 albums on 2CD deluxe editions...Frank did get a US release but the deluxe B2B did not...then there was a 4CD box of both deluxes plus more in a bookbox package called Frank & Back To Black, which I'm hanging on to...now the 5CD box...which btw, the cover b&w photography of Amy on both boxes were by, unexpectedly, Bryan Adams!! Apparently, besides his powerpop rocker side, the Canadian is a semipro photographer & good friend of Amy's...who knew?? But I am happy the 5CD set retains the UK tracklist of B2B with Addicted, but strangely leaves off the UK Frank track Help Yourself... weird...no booklets either but full album artwork & nice touch that the colour of the sidespines are the colour of the CDs, and the pic on the remix disc is a fun b&w one of Amy with headphones on with a turntable, clearly into the music on that 7"/45 single spinning...sidespine & disc a nice shade of yellow...after these 2 masterpieces, waiting for album #3 frustratingly, she passed sadly...which is why I get scared something will happen to any artist when the wait for a follow-up album is taking way too long...anyhoo, then I bought Lioness but always frustrated it was always separate from the F&B2B box, so I'm happy it's in this 5CD box, got the DVD I Told You I Was Trouble, which I'm happy the audio is on CD in the box, and remixes, some are on the first box, but this expands it...then there was the doc movie Amy which I have the soundtrack...so the only thing I don't have of Amy is vinyl, so I will get that 12x7 singles box at the right price, as it's both beautiful & heavy...and I will get the albums on coloured vinyl and/or in the UK boxset...sorry for the long boring post (haha) on Amy Winehouse RIP...

Thank you. The problem with the original CD is very low dynamic range:
http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list?artist=Amy+winehouse&album=Back+to+Black
I was hoping that the new box set had remastered sound with decent dynamic range. They probably recorded the material properly but squashed the dynamic range when they created the original master.
