Prepare to elevate your soul with this 20th anniversary box set edition of U2's All That You Can't Leave Behind.  Twenty years into their career, U2 rang in the new millennium with a career-redefining recording that saw them return to the upper echelons of the Billboard charts, with Grammy nominations and worldwide hits to boot.  With enduring instant classics like "Beautiful Day," "Walk On," "Elevation," and "Stuck in a Moment That You Can't Get Out Of," it's no wonder the album remains a favorite.  It bridges the gap between the experimental strains that U2 had explored for much of the '90s and the catchy rock that gave them their earliest successes.

For its 20th anniversary, Universal has collected almost all the material the band released in support of All That You Can't Leave Behind, expanding it to a 5-CD collection.  Though the set is comparatively light on unreleased outtakes (and the band recorded plenty of them, perhaps held back for a future rarities release?) it succeeds in presenting a time capsule of U2 circa 2000. You get a remastered version of the album, live cuts from Dublin (though regrettably not the full show), B-sides and session outtakes from various fan club releases, stray songs from soundtracks, and a disc of remixes (including a handful that haven't been released before).  Super-fans who have been collecting U2's music for decades may grumble about paying for the material again, but folks who loved the album but may not have been aware of the various CD singles, twelve-inches, and soundtrack songs will no doubt be happy to have it all in one place.

The five CDs are wrapped up in a gorgeous, double-slipcase package with a hardback book of Anton Corbijn photographs entitled Walk On: A Travelogue by Anton Corbijn (featuring the photographer's handwritten recollections) plus a media wallet with the 5 CDs, a booklet with photos and credits, and a double-sided poster.  Unfortunately, there are no new proper liner notes to speak of.  Check out the unboxing video here:

All in all, it's a handsomely designed collection that encapsulates an era that proved to be a turning point for U2.  All That You Can't Leave Behind saw the band reconciling their experimental side and their talents for catchy songcraft and it resulted in one of the highest points in their career.  With this deluxe box set, you can relive those (beautiful) days.
