Neil Young has been exciting fans lately with his comprehensive journey through the past. Following an extensive box set anthologizing an era and a 50th anniversary edition of a landmark album, he now turns his focus to a beloved Crazy Horse-backed concert from November 1990.
On February 26, Young will release the long-awaited archival release, Way Down in the Rust Bucket. It's volume 11.5 in his ongoing Archives Performance series and features Crazy Horse - newly reignited after the release of Ragged Glory - performing three hours of tunes at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz in preparation for an extensive world tour. Classics like "Cinnamon Girl," "Cortez the Killer," and "Like A Hurricane" are given exciting new life. Meanwhile, rarities and live debuts like "Danger Bird" from Zuma and the complete Ragged Glory keep the sets interesting. As any superfan who's heard the tapes can attest, the results are simply incendiary, but here in extraordinary, restored fidelity, these shows are a treasure. The LA Johnson-directed concert film (which includes an exclusive track, "Cowgirl in the Sand") uses plenty of closeups, action shots, and sequences to put you in the small club. The video quality may not be the highest definition but this over-30-year-old film is nonetheless a raw, gritty document of an outstanding performance by an always-raw, always-gritty band.
The most deluxe configuration of Way Down In the Rust Bucket presents the show across 4 LPs, 2 CDs, and a DVD in a box set. Stand-alone 2-CD and 4-LP configurations will also be released. Way Down in the Rust Bucket will be available to order physically from the Greedy Hand Online Store and the Neil Young Archives website. Digital download and streaming versions will be released across DSPs, including Neil's own Neil Young Archives platform, which presents the music in its highest-possible resolution.
Contrary to its name, Way Down in the Rust Bucket is no barrel-scraping exercise. It's prime Neil Young and Crazy Horse doing what they do best: thrilling audiences with an energy all their own. Witness it for yourself on February 26. To whet your appetite, enjoy this preview album trailer:

You know that it is a three hour concert, however, that is not possible on two CDs. At 80 minutes apiece that would only be two hours and 40 minutes. Not meaning to be picky just accurate.
Darren Linklater says
The CDs don’t include Cowgirl in the Sand which will make it up to pretty close to 3 hours. Apparently some technical issue with the audio prevents its inclusion and they used bootleg audio for the DVD.
Good to see a return to reasonable pricing. I will spring for the deluxe.
Larry Davis says
Based on the math, that means "Cowgirl" will be 20 minutes long?? Or at least over 10?? Wouldn't be surprised as the man & band does jam!!

It’s just shit that the only way to get the DVD is to buy the deluxe set

Since “Cowgirl” doesn’t fit on the CDs (nor apparently the LPs), how about a free download of the song then to purchasers of either format?
Oh, Neil.
Larry Davis says
I wonder how this will be, compared to "Arc/Weld'?? That amazing live album was from the same "Ragged Glory" era as this... will def get the box as that's the only way to get the actual film on DVD...
Gareth Hodgkinson says
Since seeing Neil and the horse supported by the Eagles in Bristol.I am still a fan nearly fifty years later. Gareth

I have a 2cd bootleg from S.Cruz nov.13 where it's included and the time there is 13.02. But it does not include Cinnamon girl and Danger bird.

The music is fantastict, but the release is a big disappointment. The decision to quickly dump out of the crowd noise into silence between almost every song kills the feeling of listening to a live show. Comes across as just a bunch of individual live songs randomly strung together. This has been continuously hyped as an amazing 3 hour Neil Young show. You don't get that feeling here. Bowie's live lp Stage did this and it was resoundly criticized and the between song silence later fixed. The music on this is amazing, but whoever put this together like this should be let go and replaced with someone who understands the value of a complete live show. If you buy this, prepared to be annoyed.
