If you're troubled and you can't relax, close your eyes and think on this...
So begins "Armenia City in the Sky," the first track on The Who Sell Out. Originally released in December 1967, the album reflects not only the hippie counterculture, but also the maturing of rock music as an art form. Here, The Who go between psych-rock, pop, childlike ditties, jazzy ballads, and even a rock opera - not to mention the breakthrough hit "I Can See For Miles". It's tied together (rather loosely) with ads and jingles to sound like a Radio London broadcast, a nod to pop-art. Ambitious, bold, and unlike anything else in The Who's catalogue, The Who Sell Out remains a beloved gem among fans. Over fifty years on, a recent vault excavation has unearthed a new super deluxe box set edition of The Who Sell Out, announced today!
The Who Sell Out: Super Deluxe Edition will be released on April 23 as a 5-CD/2x7" box set complete with a book and various ephemera. CD 1 features the original mono mix of The Who Sell Out, along with 19 mono bonus tracks. These include single mixes of "Pictures of Lily" and "Doctor, Doctor;" the band's versions of The Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb" and "The Last Time;" "Magic Bus," and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." The first disc also includes outtakes, alternate versions, and unused jingles. CD 2 includes The Who Sell Out in its original stereo mix, plus 13 bonus tracks. Among them are era outtakes like "Someone's Coming," "Glittering Girl," and "Early Morning Cold Taxi," two Coca-Cola jingles, and a studio version of "Summertime Blues."
The rest of the CDs are packed with rarities sure to get fans excited. CD 3 features 28 outtakes and plenty of behind-the-scenes banter. The label promises it will that take the listener into the studio with a fly-on-the-wall experience. For fans of The Who, this will no doubt be a highlight of the set. CD 4 collects 14 Who recordings from 1968, entitled The Road To Tommy. You'll hear finished takes of many of the tracks featured on the outtakes disc, as well as the complete studio take of "Fortune Teller," the unedited stereo mix of "Magic Bus" (and its mono "long version" counterpart), plus the backing track to the unreleased song "Facts of Life," otherwise known as "Birds and Bees." The rarities continue on CD 5 with 14 previously unreleased demos by Pete Townshend, including two previously unheard songs: "Kids! Do You Want Kids?" and "Inside Outside."
The CDs are housed inside an 80-page hardback book featuring unseen photos, full track annotations, newly penned liner notes by Pete Townshend and comments from Radio London's Pete Drummond, Speakeasy club manager Roy Flynn, designer Richard Evans, and Who biographer Andy Neill. You'll also find a reproduction of the "I Can See For Miles" / "Someone's Coming" and "Magic Bus / Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" picture sleeve singles. Of course, the collection wouldn't be complete without memorabilia - including a 20"x30" Adrian George poster, a replica concert poster and flier, program, promotional photo, fan club newsletter, a bumper sticker, and even a reproduction of Keith Moon's Speakeasy Club membership card. It's all housed in a deluxe slip case.
If a 7-disc box set sounds like a hard sell, The Who Sell Out will also be available in a more digestible 2-CD configuration made up of the first two discs of the super deluxe physical box, or a 2-LP configuration comprised of the same tracks as CD 2 of the big box set. An online exclusive 2LP deluxe mono pressing will also be available, featuring the original album and extras highlights from box set pressed on colored vinyl; disc 1 "Odorono" red / disc 2 "Baked Bean" orange.
Interestingly, the digital edition of the set includes 6 tracks that do not appear on the CDs, reportedly due to time constraints associated with the medium. These are: "Our Love Was (Take 12 Rejected Mono Mix)," early mono versions of "Rael" and "I Can See For Miles" which have been newly mixed, plus single mixes of "Someone's Coming," "Magic Bus," and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" in the same mixes as the 7" singles in the box.
To preview the April 23 reissue of The Who Sell Out, three of Pete Townshend's demos - "Kids! Do You Want Kids," "Odorono," and "Pictures of Lily" - have been released as instant grat singles. You can give them a listen in the Spotify widget below or wherever you prefer to stream and download music. Keep scrolling for a full track listing and pre-order links!

David B says
Incredible box set - enough content to please any Who fan. Have pre-ordered and hope there's a super deluxe version of "Who's next" out later this year ...
Steve C says
Can anyone confirm that the 80-page book is 12X12? If smaller, I may need to move up my cataract surgery...
Sam Stone says
Hi Steve, thanks for reading. Yes, the presentation will match previous box sets with the 12x12 book.
zally says
ESSENTIAL. the demos are wonderfull from what i heard.this is what a super deluxe edition should be.
Joe Mac Pherson says
Between this and Japan's 1979 album, Quiet Life deluxe boxset, my expenses for March have changed real fast.
I always thought of Sell Out as a masterpiece of Pop Art, transferred to Pop Music.
Thank You, for such an informative report!
uzine says
Everyone who would want to buy this already has the deluxe 2cd ... so why not launch a rarities series separately instead ? One reason only : greed.
For instance why not release a box set or 2cd deluxe version of https://www.discogs.com/The-Who-%E3%82%B6%E3%83%95%E3%83%BC-Whos-Missing-Twos-Missing-%E3%83%95%E3%83%BC%E3%82%BA%E3%83%9F%E3%83%83%E3%82%B7%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B0-%E3%83%88%E3%82%A5%E3%83%BC%E3%82%BA%E3%83%9F%E3%83%83%E3%82%B7%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B0/release/5901194
(Incidentally Joe, Sam & co : once again the link in the newsletter didn't open the article. It shows a blank space, upon which I then went to the home page, scrolled to find this article, and only then got to see the actual content your newsletter was trying to deliver.)
zally says
the japanese box has all 4 world wide covers and extra bonus tracks not on here. it was issued bout 10 years ago.
Gerbrand says
The 2009 Japanese box has different packaging (and SHM-CD) but has the same tracks as the worldwide 2009 DeLuxe 2CD. And all those tracks (and more) are included in this new SuperDeluxe.
Kevin Skory says
Amazon Canada still doesn't have the box set listed. Any idea if they will carry it?
Bill says
Does the two CD version have all the songs from the earlier 1995 enhanced edition ((MCASD-11268)? if not, which items from the 1995 version are not on this new version?
Gerbrand says
3 songs from 1995 are not included in the 2009 2-CD and not included in the 2021 2-cd:
Melancholia
Glow Girl (with fade ending)
Girl’s Eyes (complete ending)
A shorter version of Girl’s Eyes is included on the 2-CD’s.
Jim K says
Does anyone know if the colored vinyl mono edition will be available in indie record stores, or only online from Universal?
Thanks
zally says
if you think that the track listing looks familiar and think ahhh i already got this you will be shocked.started with disc 3 and just cant believe what i am hearing. UNREAL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bill Lord says
Those who bought the digital version may notice a handful of tracks from the announced listing are not included in the released version. First "disc" is missing Sunn Equipment Promo Spots (Mono Version), Great Shakes (Unreleased US Radio Commercial) and Rael (Early Mono Version) (2018 Mix). "Disc" Two is missing Someone’s Coming, Glittering Girl and Sodding About. "Disc" 3 omits Shakin’ All Over (Take 3). A studio version has never seen light of day. "Disc" Four notably omits Magic Bus (Unedited Stereo Mix) which would be a big loss as it's never been released. "Disc" Five is missing Pete's Demo of I Can See For Miles, also never before released.
Puzzling to be sure, are these a mistake, oversight? In the case of the three noted, these are significant. As there's so much duplication from the previous non-Super 2 disc Deluxe Edition, the real attraction of this set is new previously unreleased gems. To be missing three of them, whether by oversight or design, damages the value of this new set.
