Real Gone Music continues its excavation of overlooked and classic albums with more vinyl reissues from the vaults and a new addition to the Black Jazz Records series. It all starts with a color reissue of Voïvod's The Outer Limits on April 30. Jazz fans will want to check the stacks (or online shops) that same day for Chester Thompson's Powerhouse, a Black Jazz Records gem set for reissue on vinyl and CD. Then on May 28, Real Gone will reissue Fountains of Wayne's turn-of-the-millennium classic Welcome Interstate Managers on vinyl for its first wide-release to general retail following a limited run last Record Store Day.
First up is Canadian metal legends Voïvod, whose progressive leanings incorporate sci-fi fantasies, off-kilter rhythms, and plenty of atonal explorations. Their 1993 album The Outer Limits has become one of their most sought-after albums on vinyl, with original pressings commanding eye-watering prices. Now, The Outer Limits is set for release on a blue-with-black-swirl colorway to celebrate its first-ever U.S. vinyl reissue. From the epic prog-metal standout "Jack Luminous" to their interpretation of Pink Floyd's heaviest early track, "The Nile Song," The Outer Limits has plenty to offer, right down to the comic book-inspired artwork. The art is reprised on this latest pressing and also features a full-color inner sleeve with lyrics and illustrations by the band's drummer, Michael Langevin's. But you might want to place those pre-orders quickly as this edition is limited to just 1,500 copies.
Also on April 30, Real Gone Music will continue its reissue series of the Black Jazz Records catalog with one of its finest gems, Chester Thompson's Powerhouse. Thompson might be best known for his tenures with Santana and Tower of Power, but on his 1971 album he proved that his unique brand of electrified, straight-ahead jazz could translate to a small combo, too. Powerhouse features Rudolph Johnson on searing saxophone, legendary jazz and soul drummer Raymond Pounds (whose credits include everyone from Pharaoh Sanders to The Pointer Sisters, and Stevie Wonder), as well as CTI's resident trombonist Al Hall.
For this new reissue, Powerhouse has been newly remastered for CD and vinyl. In addition to the standard black vinyl edition, a RGM store-exclusive "clear with black swirl" colorway will be pressed, as well as an orange with black swirl pressing exclusive to independent record shops. New liner notes include Bay Area jazz greats like Dave Garibaldi (Tower of Power) and keyboardist Todd Cochran a.k.a. Bayeté speaking to Chester Thompson's musical might. Just one listen and you'll be able to testify to it, too!
On May 28, RGM will revisit one of their most popular Record Store Day releases - Fountains of Wayne's Welcome Interstate Managers - to give the album its first general retail release on vinyl. The ambitious double-album was the commercial breakthrough for the power-pop favorites. It, of course, featured the inescapable hit "Stacy's Mom," but there's plenty more to enjoy among its 17 tracks. "Bright Future in Sales," "Hey Julie," and "Supercollider" are particular standouts. An instant classic upon its release and now a bittersweet one thanks to the passing of Adam Schlesinger from COVID-19, Welcome Interstate Managers now arrives once more, this time with a wider release on red vinyl. Like the previous RSD issue, it will come with a bonus track, the non-album B-side "Elevator Up."
So whether you're after power-pop, outsider prog-metal, soul-jazz, or all three, Real Gone has you covered this spring with their slate of vinyl and CD releases. You can find the details for all the releases and links to pre-order below!
