(Re-)Enter Sandman: Metallica Expands "The Black Album" to Epic Proportions, Releases All-Star Charity Tribute Album

Metallica's self-titled 1991 album - otherwise known as The Black Album - turns 30 this year, and the band isn't about to let that milestone go unnoticed.  The Black Album gave the band its first chart-topping album in ten countries, including the U.S. where it spent four weeks atop the Billboard 200.  It also yielded a string of singles led by "Enter Sandman," a No. 16 hit on the Hot 100.  To date, Metallica remains the biggest-selling album in the history of Nielsen's SoundScan, a testament to the timeless metal riffs laid down by James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Jason Newsted, and Lars Ulrich.

On September 10, Metallica's own Blackened Recordings will revisit The Black Album in a variety of newly-remastered formats (with the core album remastered by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering and the remaining material by Reuben Cohen at Lurssen Mastering):

The Limited Edition Deluxe Box Set is the most expansive iteration.  The numbered set boasts the album remastered on single CD and 180-gram double LP; a "Sad But True" picture disc; three live LPs; 14 CDs (containing rough mixes, alternates, demos, rehearsals, interviews, single edits, and live shows); six DVDs (with music videos, behind-the-scenes footage, home movies, and live shows); an MP3 download card of all audio; and swag including four tour laminates, lanyard, three lithographs, three guitar picks, lyric folder and sheets, and a 120-page hardcover book with never-before-seen photos and commentary from key personnel.

But that's not all.  Metallica continues the Black Album celebration with a second box set due on October 1, The Metallica Blacklist.  Over 53 tracks, artists of various genres and generations celebrate the legacy of The Black Album with their own reinterpretations of its twelve songs.  The release groups the songs together in the original album order; in other words, the album begins with six versions of "Enter Sandman," continues with seven interpretations of "Sad But True," and so on.  Artists include Weezer, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit, St. Vincent, Biffy Clyro, The Neptunes, Phoebe Bridgers, Mickey Guyton, My Morning Jacket, Darius Rucker, Chris Stapleton, Imelda May, Kamasi Washington, and Miley Cyrus featuring WATT, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, current Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo, and Chad Smith.

The Metallica Blacklist will be available in multiple formats including a 4CD box set; a limited edition 7LP vinyl box; and download/streaming.  Profits from the release will be divided evenly between charities of the artist's choice and Metallica's All Within My Hands Foundation.

JOE MARCHESE (Editor) joined The Second Disc shortly after its launch in early 2010, and has since penned daily news and reviews about classic music of all genres. In 2015, Joe formed the Second Disc Records label. Celebrating the great songwriters, producers and artists who created the sound of American popular song, Second Disc Records, in conjunction with Real Gone Music, has released newly-curated collections produced by Joe from iconic artists such as Johnny Mathis, Bobby Darin, Laura Nyro, Melissa Manchester, Chet Atkins, and many others. He has contributed liner notes to reissues from a diverse array of artists, among them Nat "King" Cole, Paul Williams, Lesley Gore, Dusty Springfield, B.J. Thomas, The 5th Dimension, Burt Bacharach, The Mamas and the Papas, Carpenters, Perry Como, Rod McKuen, Doris Day, Jackie DeShannon, and Andy Williams, and has compiled releases for talents including Robert Goulet and Keith Allison of Paul Revere and the Raiders. Over the past two decades, Joe has also worked in a variety of capacities on and off Broadway as well as at some of the premier theatres in the U.S., including Lincoln Center Theater, George Street Playhouse, Paper Mill Playhouse, Long Wharf Theatre, and the York Theatre Company. He has felt privileged to work on productions alongside artists such as the late Jack Klugman, Eli Wallach, Arthur Laurents, Betty Comden and Adolph Green. In 2009, Joe began contributing theatre and music reviews to the print publication The Sondheim Review, and in 2012, he joined the staff of The Digital Bits as a regular contributor writing about film and television on DVD and Blu-ray. Joe currently resides in the suburbs of New York City.

  1. wow .. this sounds incredible .. though has anyone else noticed what seems to be Amazon's latest policy?Namely put the three cd set out for a reasonable price but charge the earth for the one or two cd set .

    Here £30 for the Metallica 3 cd set, but an extortionate amount of £19 for the single cd .. a practice they've also used for George Harrison's "All things must pass" set .. £22 for the two cd set but £25 for the 3 cd set .. erm they're not trying to get us to buy the dearer set are they????

    Not good if you only want the original album remastered without any extras. I just hope the prices fall by release day ...
