The Replacements burst onto the scene with 1981's Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash. The Minneapolis band's debut arrived on the city's independent Twin/Tone label, its eighteen punk nuggets (more than half of which were under two minutes in length) imbued with a pop accessibility and reckless, rebellious spirit. Lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Paul Westerberg, drummer Chris Mars, and brothers Bob and Tommy Stinson (on lead guitar and bass, respectively) came close to implosion more than once, but ultimately The Replacements left behind a legacy of song that resonates to the present day.
Following two recent boxes dedicated to the band's Sire era, Rhino is turning its attention to Sorry Ma with a new 40th anniversary set due on October 22. The 4-CD/1-LP collection, presented in Rhino's by-now-familiar 12 x 12 hardcover book format, contains a generous 100 tracks, a full 67 of which are previously unreleased including the 'Mats' first demo recordings from 1980 and a professionally recorded concert from 1981. In addition to the remastered original album and non-LP B-side "If Only You Were Lonely," the set also features rough mixes, alternate takes, and demos from the band's first eighteen months together. The LP, Deliberate Noise, offers an alternate imagining of the album with previously unreleased versions of each song.
The first disc comprises the album remaster and B-side. Disc Two, Raised in the City, features those early recordings plus outtakes that didn't make the final album and private "basement" recordings. While some of these tracks appeared on Rhino's 2008 reissue, more than two-thirds of the disc is previously unissued. Disc Three, Tape's Rolling, also reprises four tracks from the 2008 edition but adds over two dozen more never-before-released cuts. These encompass alternate versions and mixes as well as Paul Westerberg's home demos of four songs ("You're Pretty When You're Rude," "If Only You Were Lonely," "Bad Worker," and "You're Getting Married").
The fourth CD comprises the earliest professional live recording of the band. The show from The 7th St. Entry in Minneapolis was preserved by Twin/Tone's mobile unit on January 23, 1981, months prior to the August 25 release of Sorry, Ma; segments were broadcast on the local radio station KFAI. The show, titled Unsuitable for Airplay for this release, boasts numerous tracks that would appear on the 'Mats' debut plus "lost" songs ("Mistake," "Excuse Me") and covers (The Kinks' "All Day and All of the Night," Dave Edmunds' "Trouble Boys," The Heartbreakers' "I Wanna Be Loved," Slade's "My Town"), all in the band's frenetic and loose style.
Bob Mehr, who received a Grammy Award for Best Album Notes for his work on the band's Dead Man's Pop box, returns to write new liners for Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash: Deluxe Edition. The box was produced by Twin/Tone co-founder Peter Jesperson, Rhino's Jason Jones, and Mehr. In addition to Mehr's essay (with draws on interviews with the band members), the booklet features notes by Jesperson about the band's earliest days at Twin/Tone.
While the box will be available to Amazon and general retail, the Rhino-exclusive edition will additionally include a reproduction of the original flyer for the 7th St. Entry show. A bundle also available only at Rhino.com will offer the box set, a 7-inch reissue of the band's debut single "I'm in Trouble" b/w "If Only You Were Lonely," a bumper sticker, and a pin pack. Other bundles have a cassette of a Westerberg interview and a placemat. Visit Rhino.com for information on all of these bundles.
Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash: Deluxe Edition arrives in stores from Rhino on October 22. The same day, the audio will be released to digital/streaming outlets. You'll find pre-order links and the complete track listing with discography below!

Robert Lett says
Looks like we’re getting the deluxe treatment for the whole catalog and I’m very OK with that! 🔥🔥🔥
Jim Vandegrift says
Bring them on! Great news
Larry Davis says
Coolness...so what's up with the legendary live bootleg "the sh#t hits the fans"??
Paul E. says
That show was recorded in 1984 which is “Let It Be” album territory. It wasn’t released until 1985 so that would align with “Tim”. Either way, the cover versions/copyright restrictions probably mean it won’t ever see an updated release- unless, of course, The Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, etc. are bigger fans than I thought they were.
Larry Davis says
ah, so we have to see what happens when they do the deluxe treatment of "Let It Be" or "Tim"...have to be honest, I thought for sure a box of "Tim" would be next, not "Sorry Ma"...and it will be interesting when it's time for "Stink"...how or will (??) that get expanded?? Doing them out of order makes things less predictable...methinks...
