In 1971, Cat Stevens, a.k.a. Yusuf Islam, built upon the success of his first two albums for Island Records (U.K.) and A&M Records (U.S.) with Teaser and the Firecat. Featuring three of the singer-songwriter's most beloved songs - "Peace Train," "Moonshadow," and an adaptation of the hymn "Morning Has Broken" - Teaser became his first U.K. and U.S. top five chart entry, reaching No. 2 on both charts. Following last year's 50th anniversary deluxe reissues of Mona Bone Jakon and Tea for the Tillerman, Teaser and the Firecat will return from A&M/UMe on November 12 in various editions.
With its frequently gentle melodies, alternately romantic and socially aware lyrics, and varied arrangements (including bouzouki and Caribbean flavors), Teaser vaulted Stevens to the forefront of the singer-songwriter movement. Both "Peace Train" and "Morning Has Broken" went top 10 on the U.S. Pop chart and topped the Adult Contemporary survey, with the latter inspiring covers from an array of artists including Johnny Mathis and Floyd Cramer. "Moonshadow" fared almost as well, reaching the top 30 in the U.S. and U.K. and No. 10 AC. It would inspire covers from the eclectic likes of Roger Whittaker and Labelle and much later provide the basis of a musical. Other songs from Teaser went on to have further lives, too. "The Wind" has appeared in films including Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous and Wes Anderson's Rushmore. The LP made an impact throughout the world, including in Australia where it became the biggest-selling album of 1972.
The centerpiece of the upcoming campaign for Teaser and the Firecat is a lavish Super Deluxe Edition boasting 4 CDs, 1 Blu-ray, 2 LPs, and a 7-inch vinyl single. It premieres a remixed and remastered version of the original album on CD and BD, plus 41 previously unreleased tracks and 21 live performances released for the first time. Among the audio treasures are demos, alternate mixes, and reinterpretations (in the latter category, a new reworking by the older Yusuf of the album's final track, "Bitterblue²"). The 7-inch single has "Moonshadow" backed with Spike Milligan's narration from the 1977 Teaser and the Firecat animated short. The film itself is one of the features on the Blu-ray. A 44-page, 12" booklet replicates the original, long out-of-print Teaser and the Firecat storybook (written and illustrated by Stevens) with text in ten languages, while another, 108-page hardcover 12" book has liner notes and more. It's all housed in a clamshell box in the style of the recent expansions of Mona Bone Jakon, Tea for the Tillerman, and Back to Earth. Yusuf's son Yoriyos has curated and designed each box.
UMe will also offer a slightly slimmed down, slipcased version of the Super Deluxe Edition with the 108-page book in softcover format and no LPs. The 4 CDs and Blu-ray will be identical. The original album will also be available in 1-CD and 1-LP editions along with a 2-CD version with 13 bonus tracks. David Hefti has remixed Teaser and the Firecat and it's been mastered at Abbey Road Studios under the supervision of original album producer Paul Samwell-Smith.
Note that collectors should hold onto the 2008 Deluxe Edition of Teaser. While the demos from that release have been carried over, the live recordings from The Troubadour 1971 ("Moonshadow"), Royal Albert Hall 1972 ("Bitterblue"), The Majikat Earth Tour 1976 ("Tuesday's Dead"), Royal Albert Hall 2003 ("Peace Train"), and Yusuf's Café 2006 ("The Wind") have not been reprised on these new editions.
A previously unreleased demo of "Moonshadow" recorded in 1970 at Olympic Studios in London is now streaming on YouTube and other services. This recording predates the release of both Mona Bone Jakon and Tea for the Tillerman.
The various editions of Yusuf/Cat Stevens' Teaser and the Firecat are due from A&M/UMe on November 12. You'll find pre-order links and the track listings below.

At the current Amazon Canada price of $311 (Canadian), I can think of many ways to better spend that amount of money.
Phil Cohen says
Why is the version with the vinyl and optical media priced more than 50% higher than similar boxes of "Mona Bone Jakon" & "Tea For The Tillerman"? Either Universal Music is being arrogant or Amazon.com is guessing at the price. I'll wait a few months after release and see if the price drops.
zubb says
At $300, it is safe to say that this set will not be under my tree this Christmas. Yikes!
Vince says
Even Cat (I mean, Yusuf) succumbs to the trendy use of the term "reimagined"
Carl J. says
The album review says "remixed and remastered". However, everything I'm reading indicates that the album has only been remastered. I don't see any indication that the original studio multitrack tapes were used for an entirely new remix of the album.
Joe Marchese says
The press release states as follows:
"The 50th anniversary remaster of the album was mixed by David Hefti on CD and LP, the Super Deluxe Edition also includes a CD of previously unreleased studio material and bonus tracks, an alternate version of the album on LP, as well as a third and fourth CD featuring 23 live performances from 1971. The 50th anniversary remaster was completed at Abbey Road Studios, and was overseen by original album producer, Paul Samwell-Smith."
Hefti remixed MONA BONE JAKON and TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN, and the above seems to indicate the same here. But anything's possible; perhaps the incorrect verbiage has been used on Cat's end? We'll try and dig deeper.
Bill Lynd says
Pretty weird (and a shame) that the demo for "Peace Train" was not included - It's been youtube for years.
