Anyone who's heard Rumer's 2015 collection B-Sides and Rarities knows that the artist's leftovers bear the same hallmarks of quality, beauty, emotion, and elegance as her core releases. Now, seven years later, a second volume is on the way from Cooking Vinyl. B-Sides and Rarities Vol. 2 arrives April 22 on CD and digitally with a vinyl LP edition to follow from the label on October 21.
Since that initial collection, the Pakistani-born British artist has released two studio albums, one EP, and a live release. The second volume of B-Sides and Rarities features two previously unreleased original songs, "Roses" and "Old Fashioned Girl" (the latter penned by Rumer and her husband, Rob Shirakbari). Both of these were originally part of the development of 2014's Into Colour, Rumer's last album of self-penned material to date.
The collection also boasts a number of interpretations of songs from writers the artist has cited as inspirations. She celebrated Burt Bacharach and Hal David on 2016's beautiful This Girl's in Love: A Bacharach and David Songbook; here, three more of the duo's classic songs are showcased: "Anyone Who Had a Heart" (previously a Japan-only bonus track on that LP), the B-side "Wives and Lovers" featuring organist Rory More, and "The Windows of the World." 2020's moving Nashville Tears: The Songs of Hugh Prestwood explored the songbook of the Nashville Songwriters' Hall of Fame inductee ("Hard Times for Lovers," "The Song Remembers When"). Here, Prestwood is represented by Nashville Tears' Japan-only bonus track, "Never Arrive."
Other songwriters to whom Rumer has brought her silken vocals on this collection include Elton John and Bernie Taupin ("Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters"), The Bee Gees ("How Deep Is Your Love"), Van Morrison ("I Wanna Roo You," first issued on a 2011 single), Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II ("The Folks Who Live on the Hill"), Carly Simon ("You're the One"), Simon Aldred ("My Lover Lies Under"), and Donald Henry and Jonathan Vezner ("Where've You Been?").
Rumer already has potential candidates for a third volume, including her contributions to Trevor Horn's Reimagines the Eighties ("Slave to the Rhythm") and Jools Holland's Sirens of Song ("Lost Mind"). In the meantime, the shimmering lead single of B-Sides and Rarities Vol. 2, "Roses," is streaming now wherever you listen to digital music. The complete collection is due April 22 on CD and October 21 on vinyl; you'll find the track listing and pre-order links below. Rumer's official store is also offering a variety of items including an exclusive orange-colored vinyl LP and various signed editions.

Rumer is the REAL thing! Her vocals are always the perfect smoky ingredient to a well-chosen cover version or one of her delicious original songs. My addition to Rarities, Vol. 3 would be her unbelievably beautiful "We Have All the Time in the World" from the 2011 Memorial Concert to John Barry from Royal Albert Hall. This live performance captures the soaring and vulnerable melody and heart-wrenching lyric of the Barry classic, from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." A must to hear! A lo-fi version of this is available on YouTube.

Isn't it a bit too soon in her career to have released two volumes of B-sides I wonder?

I think it's good that the songs not on original album releases (the ones without bonus tracks) are available for fans. Some scour to buy an album just for a single song from an artist on a compilation album, or legally (or illegally) download that non-album track. I'm glad Rumer is gathering the songs in one place for followers of her music.
