Welcome to this week's Release Round-Up, featuring a selection of the new titles arriving in stores today!

Aerosmith The Road Starts Hear

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Aerosmith, 1971 (The Road Starts Hear) (UMe)

CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
LP: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada

One of the highlights of 2021's Record Store Day Black Friday line-up was 1971 (The Road Starts Hear) - a never-before-heard, earliest-known recording from the classic line-up of rock band Aerosmith. Nearly five months after its vinyl debut at indie record stores, the set - including a fiery early recording of "Dream On" - is released today to the general public in CD, LP, and digital formats.  Read more here.

Sway The Best of Carla Olson and Mick Taylor CD

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Carla Olson and Mick Taylor, Sway: The Best of Carla Olson and Mick Taylor (Sunset Blvd. Records) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

This new 2-CD collection from singer-songwriter Carla Olson and longtime Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor is brimming with 25 tracks (five of which are previously unreleased) of rootsy Americana, blues, and rock-and-roll.  The set expands Carla and Mick's 1990 Live (at the Roxy) album with additional tracks from the duo drawn from Olson's various studio albums.  Guests include Ian McLagan, Barry Goldberg, and harmonica virtuoso John Luke Logan.  Among the unreleased material is an extended jam on the Stones' "Winter" (over twice as long as the band's version on Goats Head Soup) while the rarities include the Japan-only bonus track "You Gotta Move."

Bonnie Pointer Like a Picasso

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Bonnie Pointer, Like a Picasso (Omnivore) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

A founding member of The Pointer Sisters who left before the group's '80s heyday, Bonnie Pointer (1950-2020) was a formidable talent in her own right.  While her two late-'70s Motown albums are disco classics (and the first yielded a major hit with her cover of Motown chestnut "Heaven Must Have Sent You"), Bonnie only released two more solo albums in her lifetime: 1984's If the Price Is Right and 2011's Like a Picasso.  The latter returns today from Omnivore in CD and digital formats.  Produced and primarily written by the duo Taylor Poe (Lloyd Poe and Robin Taylor), the album features Pointer's intricate, multi-tracked harmonies on a set of rock, soul, and blues hybrids.  Omnivore has spruced up the sound (courtesy of remastering engineer Michael Graves) and artwork of this long-overlooked indie release to give Bonnie the sendoff she deserved.  It's housed in a digipak with an eight-page booklet featuring Scott Schinder's liner notes.

Flying Over Sunset OBC

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Flying Over Sunset: Original Broadway Cast Recording (Masterworks Broadway) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

The fascinating 2021 musical by James Lapine (Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods), Tom Kitt (Next to Normal, If/Then), and Michael Korie (Grey Gardens, War Paint) - which imagines an acid trip shared by Cary Grant (Tony Yazbeck), Clare Boothe Luce (Carmen Cusack), and Aldous Huxley (Harry Hadden-Paton) - comes to CD today from Masterworks Broadway.  The digital release has already been available.

Jack White Fear of the Dawn

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Jack White, Fear of the Dawn (Third Man) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

Jack White returns with a bizarro new album with samples of William S. Burroughs, Manhattan Transfer, and Cab Calloway, blues licks, and carnival craziness; imaginative and chaotic, Fear of the Dawn is available on CD, LP, and digital formats.

So glad to see Bonnie's Like A Picasso getting some well-deserved attention. Upon it's original release this album was a genuine & pleasant surprise--content, quality, a welcome return for Bonnie, everything about it. Based on its substance alone it deserved much more attention that it received. Whether it was due to the indie label's budget or the artist herself (Bonnie's infamously had some issues throughout her career), it came & went without much attention at all. With proper PR I think it's realistic to say that this album would have caught on as the dark horse of the year. It's a raw gem, in many regards.

My big three this week are:
    Calexico "El Mirador"
Pavement "Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal" (Deluxe Reissue)
Jack White "Fear of the Dawn"

The best download only of the week award, until it comes out on 7" in late May...goes to:
The Clash (A) "Rock the Casbah (feat. Ranking Roger) / (B) "Red Angel Dragnet (feat. Ranking Roger)"
