The Cure hit their commercial stride with 1992's Wish. The band's ninth studio album and highest-charting in both the U.S. and U.K., it tapped into the burgeoning alt-rock movement while retaining the gothic sound on which The Cure made their name. Now, fans' Wishes are coming true with a 30th anniversary expansion on 3 CDs, including 24 previously unreleased tracks and a further four which are new to CD/digital. Curated by Robert Smith, Wish: Deluxe Edition is due from Rhino on October 7, with a 2-LP remastered version of the original album coming on January 27, 2023.
Jointly written by the band - Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, Perry Bamonte, Porl Thompson, and Boris Williams - and produced by Smith and David M. Allen, Wish had its roots in demo sessions held at the Live House in Cornwall and Farmyard Studios in the Cotswolds. In September 1991, recording began in earnest at The Manor in Oxfordshire. The sound was lean and tough, focusing attention on the strength of the compositions. Though the band was undergoing some changes - the LP would be their final one with Boris Williams and first with Perry Bamonte (as well as the final one with Porl Thompson for sixteen years) - Wish was cohesive and potent.
Its first single, "High," topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart in the U.S. and went to No. 8 on the U.K. Singles Chart as well as charting around the world. Second single "Friday I'm in Love" - once described by Robert Smith as a "let's get happy kind of record" - was another international success, hitting No. 6 in the U.K. and No. 18 on the U.S. Hot 100 as well as No. 1 on the Modern Rock Tracks survey. The third and final single to be released, "A Letter to Elise," went to No. 28 in the U.K. and peaked at No. 2 on the U.S. Alternative Airplay chart. Wish itself made it to No. 1 in the U.K. and No. 2 in the U.S., earning a U.S. Platinum certification and selling over three million copies worldwide.
Robert Smith had long been championing a new edition of the album. Rhino quotes him in the press release: "In the studio control room, it all sounded excellent, but I got too busy sorting out our upcoming concerts to properly oversee the mastering. It was too late to do anything about it; the album was out, and we were off around the world again. It has really bugged for me for a very long time." He's finally gotten the opportunity to master the album as he originally intended: "It has taken 30 years, but finally, finally, my Wish has come true."
The first CD contains the original album as remastered by Smith and Miles Showell at Abbey Road. Disc 2 boasts 21 previously unreleased demos (four with vocals from 1990 and seventeen instrumentals, among them nine previously unissued songs). Disc 3 offers the four tracks from the 1993 mail-order cassette Lost Wishes, none of which have appeared on CD or digitally in the past, plus a host of remixes and rarities culminating in a previously unreleased live version of "End" from Paris in 1992. The Lost Wishes track "Uyea Sound" is available now as a digital single.
With Robert Smith and the current line-up of The Cure taking the stage this October for a 44-date European tour culminating in eight U.K. shows in December, more Wishes are poised to be granted. Look for Rhino's Deluxe Edition of Wish on October 7 at the links below. Additionally, a single CD featuring the album remaster will be released, while those ordering the Deluxe Edition directly from Rhino will receive a replica cassette of Lost Wishes.

Irregardless of any missing b-sides or remixes from the plethora of "Wish" singles releases...this is a must have for me. I figure I'm covered as most appear on the "Join the Dots: B-Sides & Rarities 1978–2001" 4 disc box set. I can probably piece together all the rarities with one exception, the unreleased full/non-faded version of "Tape" from their "Sideshow" EP [never officially released].
I can't wait to hear the album as intended by Robert Smith, [finally] have the "Lost Wishes" tracks on CD, and all unreleased demo tracks. This has been a very long 30 years!

Re: Paul E. Was “Tape” never released? Haha I think I had it as a true B-side on “tape” (cassette). Shows my age.
Brian Stanley says
If I recall correctly, Rhino has been planning this reissue since before the 20th anniversary.
Speaking of Rhino, have Warner Music and Universal merged? That “Deluxe Edition” label on this artwork looks virtually identical to the packaging Universal deluxe edition had in the 2000s.
Joe Marchese says
The Cure release will come out in the U.K. on Polydor (a Universal imprint), hence that “classic” Deluxe Edition look. 🙂
Brian Stanley says
That would explain it.
Larry Davis says
Usually if I collect an artist, I go with releases on the original label in their home market...in the Cure's case, I would go with the Fiction/Polydor/Universal versions, but with new & used versions in record stores and online, it doesn't really matter to me anymore if I have a UK version or US one on Fiction-Elektra/Rhino...I do have the UK "Join The Dots" & 3CD "Mixed Up"...I used to have all the US expanded remasters up through "Disintegration" but sold them as I needed the money...in the process of getting em all back, used or new, which explains why it's likely a mix of UK & US deluxe...will get this new "Wish 30th"...

You might want to keep your eyes open for the 30th anniversary issue of Alice in Chain's "Dirt". A 2LP version is scheduled for August 12 according to Amazon. Haven't seen any pre-order links anywhere else, though.
