Walt Disney Records' still-persisting catalogue product line The Legacy Collection has been mostly dormant since 2015. After two waves of titles throughout two calendar years - each focusing on anniversaries of classic Disney films from multiple generations - the series has been stop-start since 2017, releasing expanded editions of the soundtracks to Robin Hood (1973), Beauty and the Beast (1991) and, most recently, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996). Now, a classic title is added to the Legacy Collection for its 30th anniversary: the beloved songs and score of 1992's Aladdin.
Disney entered a bold new decade with the release of Beauty and the Beast, one of the most acclaimed films in its library. As the first animated film to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture, the film also took home Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song, courtesy of the title track as written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman (whose work on 1989's The Little Mermaid kicked off a new age of Disney classics).
But it was a bittersweet final curtain for the duo: Ashman died of AIDS complications before Beauty premiered, and was unable to complete their next project: his long-desired adaptation of the Middle Eastern folktale Aladdin. Eventually, the project was heavily reorganized with Mermaid directors Ron Clements and John Musker, a new script by the duo of Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and a score that featured three of Ashman and Menken's original songs alongside four new ones by Menken and lyricist Tim Rice. Despite the lengthy gestation, audiences adored the final version of Aladdin (featuring an unusually A-list voice acting performance by Robin Williams as a pop-culture calamitous Genie). Like Beauty, it was a critical and commercial hit, and would not only win another two Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Song (for the ballad "A Whole New World"), but a Grammy Award for Song of the Year for the same tune.
While the evolution of Menken and Ashman's song score has been the subject of several catalogue titles, including the excellent out-of-print 1994 box set The Music Behind the Magic, this 2CD presentation of the music focuses primarily on offering a more complete edition of Menken's orchestral score alongside the familiar songs. (It might also be an unfortunately culturally strategic move: for reasons wholly unknowable, the fan favorite demo "Proud of Your Boy," included on previous reissues but absent here, somehow gave an American extremist organization its name.) However, bonus material includes the rarity "Why Me?" - sung by Jonathan Freeman as the villainous Jafar but cut from the film - as well as seven alternate score cues. As with previous Legacy Collection titles, artist Lorelay Bove has reimagined the classic animated style of the film with her own original art that features throughout the package.
The Legacy Collection edition of Aladdin made its debut earlier this month at Disney's annual D23 Expo fan event, and it's now available to order exclusively on the studio's Disney Music Emporium store. Check out that link and the complete track list below.

I find myself on the fence about this one. The completist in me wants it because, Legacy Collection, but I’ve already got that “Magic” box set. I lean more towards demos/unreleased songs than previously unreleased score.
The one exception might be a Legacy Collection edition of Mulan.

Where can I buy the Aladdin Legacy Collection CD? It does not seem to be available, even from Disney Music Emporium
Dave says
It apparently came and went faster than even the Genie could handle. It was on DME’s site when this article came out but it’s now gone “poof!” Not there, not on Amazon… might have to take your chances on eBay or Discogs.

I've been waiting forever for this, yet somehow it was released 2 months before I even heard about it. What rock have I been under? But looking through the track list, It doesn't seem to have the one thing I was hoping for which was the actual in-movie version of A Whole New World. I still Plan to make this a part of my collection, though.
Doug Marcellin says
Usually I can hear if a song has changed? What is so different about the song “A Whole New World?” Please let me know.
