Mark Knopfler's Late-Period Solo Albums Get Their Time in the Sun on New Box Set

Mark Knopfler The Studio Albums 2009 2018

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Mark Knopfler released his first full-length solo album in 1996.  Golden Heart began a new chapter for the singer-songwriter-guitarist who had already carved out two distinct paths as leader of Dire Straits and as a film score composer.  The 2021 box set The Studio Albums 1996-2007 collected Knopfler's first five studio albums, from Golden Heart through 2007's Kill to Get Crimson, along with a bonus disc of B-sides.  Now, a follow-up box is bringing Knopfler's studio discography up to date.  This Friday, October 7, EMI and UMC (U.K.)/UMe (U.S.) will release The Studio Albums 2009-2018 on 6 CDs, 9 LPs, or digitally (HD and SD), including the following titles:

  • Get Lucky (2009, 2 LPs or 1 CD);
  • Privateering (2012, 2 LPs or 2 CDs);
  • Tracker (2015, 2 LPs or 1 CD);
  • Down the Road Wherever (2018, 2 LPs or 1 CD); and
  • Back in the Day: The Bonus Tracks 2009-2018 (1 LP or 1 CD).

While the CD version of Back in the Day has 18 bonus tracks and the LP only has eight, the remaining ten tracks are included on the album presentations within the vinyl box.  Two previously unreleased songs, "Back in the Day" and "Precious Voice from Heaven," premiere here.  Original mastering engineer Bob Ludwig has overseen the mastering for the box set, and Bernie Grundman has cut the vinyl.

All four original albums reached the top twenty in Knopfler's native U.K. with the first three making the top ten.  The quartet was almost as successful in the U.S., with only 2012's Privateering charting lower.  In contrast to his more muscular work with Dire Straits, Knopfler embraced varied rootsy idioms on his solo sets, including blues-rock, country, folk, jazz, and Celtic music.  The versatility that led him to memorably collaborate with such artists as Randy Newman, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Tina Turner, Emmylou Harris, and the late Chet Atkins is on full display throughout these elegant LPs.  The bonus disc rounds up the assorted tracks from various editions of the releases.

While Knopfler hasn't released a studio album since 2018, he's hardly been relaxing.  He's composed a new score for the stage version of Local Hero, the 1983 film with which he made his cinematic debut; the musical premiered in Edinburgh in 2019 and will receive another high-profile production this fall in Chichester, England.

The Studio Albums 2009-2018 is released this Friday, October 7.  You'll find the track listing and pre-order links below!
