Vinyl Box Watch: Clapton, a-ha, Neutral Milk Hotel All Prep Big Sets on LP

January 11, 2023 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

For nearly no other occasion would you see these three bands in the same sentence, but it's true: vinyl box sets are all forthcoming from blues-rock legend Eric Clapton, Norwegian popsmiths a-ha, and '90s indie-folk darlings Neutral Milk Hotel.

This week, on January 13, Clapton readies The Complete Reprise Studio Albums - Volume II from Rhino Records. This 10LP set picks up where last year's first set left off, offering new remasters of Clapton's 21st century solo material for the Reprise label: Reptile (2001), the 2004 Robert Johnson tributes Me and Mr. Johnson and Sessions for Robert J (the latter making its vinyl debut), Back Home (2005) and the standards-heavy Clapton (2010) - plus a bonus disc of eight rare tracks. All albums have been newly remastered by Bob Ludwig under the supervision of Clapton's longtime producer Simon Climie, with new vinyl lacquers cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering.

Another forthcoming box offers a stalwart Rhino title, albeit licensed on vinyl from BMG instead: 1985's Hunting High and Low, the debut album by a-ha. The Norwegian trio made a big splash with the immortal chart-topper "Take on Me," but don't be fooled by their one-hit wonder status in America: the album, including singles and favorites like "The Sun Always Shines on T.V.," "Train of Thought," "Hunting High and Low," "And You Tell Me" and others, absolutely cooks. This 6LP box, pressed on 140-gram vinyl and released February 24, replicates the audio contents of Rhino's 2015 deluxe box set edition of the album, offering the same demos, B-sides, remixes and even an early alternate mix of the album. The bonus discs feature newly-created sleeves featuring art inspired by the iconic "Take on Me" video, and the rigid 12" x 12" box also holds a 64-page book of liner notes.

Finally, there's one last big box set getting reissued on vinyl this quarter as well: Neutral Milk Hotel's The Collected Works. Originally self-released by NMH's creative force Jeff Mangum in 2011 (and repressed three years later), this set will now be available through Merge Records on February 24. Spanning three LPs, three 7" singles, two 10" singles and a 12" picture disc, the box now includes some live recordings unavailable elsewhere alongside the group's albums On Avery Island (1996) and the acclaimed In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998), plus other collections of material and even two 24" x 24" posters.

We hope you enjoyed this strange trip through genres! Full details and pre-order links for each box are below.

Mike Duquette

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.
