To kick off 2023, Real Gone Music is bringing two titles to vinyl for the first time from two bands from the 1990s: Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's Americana Deluxe and Fountain of Wayne's compilation Out-of-State Plates. Both titles hit store shelves today, January 13, along with vinyl re-presses of Jack Kerouac and Steve Allen's Poetry for the Beat Generation and Kerouac's Blues and Haikus.
Scotty Morris and Kurt Sodergren came together to form Big Bad Voodoo Daddy in 1989 in Ventura, California. (Other members would eventually join the fold, but the duo would be the core of the group.) They wrote their own material, but in the style of 1940s swing music. The band released their self-title debut in 1994 on their own label, and their big break would come two years later when three of their songs were featured on the soundtrack to the film Swingers. (The band also cameoed in the movie.) Soon, the group would sign with Interscope Records.
The band released their first album for the label in 1998: Americana Deluxe. It's sometimes known simply as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy because of the band's name being prominent on the cover art, but that is not the album's official title. The record blended new material with some re-recordings from the band's first album and the Swingers soundtrack. It also featured a cover of Cab Calloway's 1931 million-selling hit "Minnie the Moocher." Americana Deluxe hit No. 47 on the charts and helped propel the "swing revival" movement of the 1990s to its peak.
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has continued to record since Americana Deluxe. Between frequent touring and television appearances, the band has released seven more studio albums, with their most recent being 2017's Louie Louie Louie on Savoy. To celebrate Americana Deluxe's 25th anniversary, Real Gone's vinyl reissue spreads the album out over two LPs and comes in a gatefold jacket. It is the album's debut on vinyl and is pressed on clear with yellow swirl vinyl.
Named after a lawn ornament store in New Jersey, Fountains of Wayne was formed by Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood in the mid-1990s. A demo got them signed to Atlantic Records where they released their self-titled debut album of original material in 1996. For that release, the duo played nearly all of the guitars, keyboards and drums themselves, with Collingwood on lead vocals. Soon thereafter, they recruited lead guitarist Jody Porter and drummer Brian Young to the group. The next record, Utopia Parkway (a concept album about suburban life), didn't arrive until 1999. While well-received, the long gestation period frustrated Atlantic, who dropped the band.
Fountains of Wayne went their separate ways for a couple of years with each member working on solo projects or with other bands. They reunited to contribute to a Kinks tribute album in 2001, which lead to them reforming for another full-length record. Signed to S-Curve Records/Virgin, they released Welcome Interstate Managers in 2003. It introduced their biggest hit single, the Grammy-nominated "Stacy's Mom," which hit No. 21 on the Pop chart and went Gold.
In 2005, Fountains of Wayne released Out-of-State Plates, a 2-CD compilation featuring rarities from the group's discography to that point. The majority of the 31 tracks, initially released as B-sides, comprise original songs from the band. But there are some interesting covers including Bacharach and David's "Trains and Boats and Planes," Jackson Browne's "These Days," ELO's "Can't Get It Out of My Head," and Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time." Two unreleased Schlesinger/Collingwood originals made their debut on the compilation: "Maureen" and "Small Favors." Fountains of Wayne would release two more albums: 2007's Traffic and Weather and 2011's Sky Full of Holes. They then broke up again and went their separate ways. Another reunion would never come to pass as Adam Schlesinger passed away from complications from COVID-19 in April, 2020. The surviving members of the band got together to perform at a tribute concert for him later that month.
Real Gone's new vinyl reissue of Out-of-State Plates comes on 2 LPs and is the album's first appearance on vinyl. It comes in a gatefold package and includes the commentary from Schlesinger and Collingwood from the original release. The LPs come in "junkyard swirl" vinyl to match the cover art.

I saw "King of Swing" and got excited that it would be a release of Benny Goodman's material. Happy to see this, nonetheless.
