If Edsel's recent double-disc overview of the work of early rock pioneer Del Shannon wasn't enough for you, the label has even more: a 12CD box set comprehensively covering the singer's oeuvre.
Stranger in Town: A Del Shannon Compendium pretty definitively captures the work of the man born Charles Weedon Westover, from early landmark hits like the chart-topper "Runaway," "Hats Off to Larry" and "Little Town Flirt," all the way to scores of posthumously released sessions. It comprises material from several labels, including Bigtop, Amy, Liberty, Dunhill/ABC, United Artists, Warner Bros. and MCA - such a thing could probably only happen outside the U.S. - and includes a dozen unreleased tracks in its offering.
A key figure of early '60s rock and roll in the days before the British invasion (and a 1999 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), Shannon conveyed wounded relationships and easygoing freedom with equal aplomb in his discography. While he wasn't always at the forefront of the hit parade, his tenacity and variety earned him fans and even a few places as a trailblazer outside his own solo work. (Shannon formed his own labels and publishing companies to administer some of his work, and as a producer for the Cameo label, he was one of the first to work with an up-and-coming Detroit musician named Bob Seger.) Forays into country and psychedelic styles would become cherished by cratediggers over the years, and in the years before he tragically took his own life in 1990, he'd logged studio time alongside Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra as well as Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. (Shannon was bandied about as a potential replacement in supergroup The Traveling Wilburys after Roy Orbison's passing, and Lynne and Petty were heavily involved in Rock On!, posthumously released in 1991.)
In addition to a dozen original studio and live albums in Stranger in Town, you'll also find a trove of posthumous collections - 1967's shelved Home and Away album, released in its original mix nearly 50 years later; a 1977 session in Dublin; various '80s recordings in Nashville (four of which were released on singles by Warner Bros.) - and two discs of '60s outtakes and demos compiled by Bear Family for a comprehensive box set in 2014. The box comes with a 28-page book of liner notes by Alan Robinson, with rare photos and memorabilia rounding out the design in the package.
Stranger in Town makes itself known this Friday, February 24. Pre-order your copy and check out the full track list below.

Kevin Walsh says
Seger, Brown, or Hideout are credited as producers on all of Seger’s Hideout and Cameo singles. Was there really a Shannon involvement?
