The Four Seasons are one of America's most resonant and enduring pop/rock outfits. Between the group and its distinctive frontman Frankie Valli, they've scored around a dozen Top 10 hits - seven of which went to No. 1. Their early output in the '60s held its own against the British Invasion. They maintained hits into the disco era, and a cover of one of their songs hit the upper reaches of the Billboard Hot 100 in 2021. The original quartet was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and were immortalized in a four-time Tony Award-winning musical that's still running around the world, including in London's West End. And if all of that is not enough of a case for their endurance, there's a massive box set coming on June 2 to bold, italicize, and underline the Four Seasons' supremacy.
Working Our Way Back to You: The Ultimate Collection - at last seeing release from the Madfish label after substantial delays - tells the story of Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, Nick Massi, and other members in deep detail: 44 CDs and one vinyl LP, packed with rare, out-of-print and unreleased material from the group's entire history. It goes so much deeper than "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Walk Like a Man," "Rag Doll," "Can't Take My Eyes Off You," "Beggin'," "My Eyes Adored You," "Who Loves You," "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)" and "Grease," to name just 10 songs from the group (and their frontman)'s canon.
The box includes all of The Seasons' and Valli's solo albums, released on the Vee Jay, Philips, Motown, Private Stock, Warner Bros., MCA, Curb and Rhino labels between 1962 and 2017. Mono and stereo mixes have been preserved - including the first-ever mono release of the 1969 cult classic The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette (available on CD and vinyl) - along with single sides, demos, alternate mixes and other rarities. A few of the discs are completely unreleased, including a group of long-coveted mid-'70s Seasons sessions for Motown Records, a lost late '70s disco album, and three live sets recorded between 1972 and 1974. Three new compilations of rarities, unreleased tracks and ephemera are also included. (There's even Jersey Babys, a 2008 collection of recordings of Seasons material for young listeners, ostensibly inspired by the runaway success of musical Jersey Boys.)
In addition to all the audio content (all in CD-sized replicas of the original album sleeves), the exhaustive packaging includes a 144-page hardback book featuring liner notes and biographical information by Four Seasons authority Paul Sexton as well as historian Ken Sharp's interviews with such key personnel as Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Charlie Calello, Jake Holmes, Sandy Linzer, Kenny Nolan, the late Tommy DeVito and Joe Long, and more. Famous fans including Billy Joel, Liberty DeVitto, Brian Wilson, Barry Gibb, and Stevie Van Zandt, all of whom were inspired by the group's harmonic sounds, have made contributions, too. Make no mistake, this book is coffee table-worthy.
A second 24-page book has disc-by-disc, album-by-album liner notes geared at collectors, and a third book offers an array of picture sleeves from the Seasons' singles and EPs as released around the world, along with chart placements. The aforementioned Genuine Imitation Life Gazette vinyl features the fully-recreated triple gatefold sleeve of its original issue. Valli (who still tours with a set of Seasons to this day) and his longtime handshake partner Gaudio (who composed many of those classic melodies) have given this set their full blessing, making this the ultimate official word on Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons.
Pre-order the box below and get ready for your jaw to drop at the updated track list! It's out on June 2 from Snapper Music.

Rob M says
What changed (added/subtracted) from previous track lists?
Joe Marchese says
A handful of tracks have been added; the originally provided track listing can be viewed here:
https://theseconddisc.com/2022/06/28/new-four-seasons-mega-box-will-have-you-swearin-to-god/
Ivan J Goldberg says
I would love to know what the CD faces look like if they even resemble the original labels like VeeJay / Phillips / WB et all
Johnathan Pop says
Well, my jaw dropped for sure — but at the list price!
ISH says
certainly gonna weed out casual shoppers, oh my.
Robert Lett says
Waiting for mine!
Pd says
Wonder if we’ll ever see a stand-alone GIL vinyl?
Shawn C. says
Wow comprehensive and very expensive! I'm a fan, but too casual to drop 500 bucks for this.
Ed says
Well, I guess the mammoth number of discs and the price point is one way to test the market for CD's and, particularly, super deluxe sets. Would love to see the sales numbers six months and a year from now.
zubb says
What an amazing set for hard core fans. I hope eventually these discs will all be made available individually as I would only be interested in the Valli and Four Seasons 70s albums.
ed says
A few years ago, Real Gone reissued the Seasons' first two LPs in nice album-jacket type packaging. I had hoped that the series would continue, but that didn't happen. I can't say that this Gargantuan set replaces that earlier, wished-for series, since it's an all-or-nothing proposition at a very big price. Whatever happened to the earlier Seasons-Real Gone relationship?
Ivan J Goldberg says
Those two can be found. I wish I knew what the new cd faces look like that would make the difference for me when spending that kind of money!!!
John F says
That's a whole of Jersey right there.
Rob says
Would be nice to know the source tapes used and who the mastering engineer is. Crucial info they should be providing.
Joe Marchese says
Pete Reynolds has mastered. Bill Inglot is credited with tape research. My understanding is that all content has been sourced from original master tapes held by the labels and/or by the Four Seasons Partnership as well as Tommy DeVito’s estate. The previously unreleased live content is said to be soundboard quality.
Rob says
Very much appreciated, thank you Joe. Looks like his credits are mostly for remastering classical titles, haven't heard his work before. Hopefully he's not a dynamic range cruncher...
Rob M says
He's been remastering the other big Snapper project: the Philadelphia International Records catalog box sets. I've heard the first two sets, and they sound fantastic, IMO. Dynamic, not crunched, no perceptible noise reduction.
I'd say be cautiously optimistic, but optimistic nonetheless.
Larry Davis says
It is a big expensive set for sure, and I'm sure it will be worth it, the amount of content included...I would not spend that kind of money on just anything, and I once had the Rhino 3CD/DVD boxset, which I highly enjoyed, and I almost bought the album boxes of the 4 Seasons & Frankie Valli, but didn't get around to it...this behemoth will replace those purchases...it's much more complete...with tons of bonuses including unreleased albums and new remastering...good timing too, with my soon to be received tax refund...
Pierre Britten says
Last year, I bought the Frankie Valli & the 4 Seasons box set called "The Classic Albums Box" (issued in 2014 on Rhino). Not as comprehensive as this, of course, but still... It contains the first 18 albums of the band (but no solo FV) and it costs only about seventy dollars US.
Kenny says
Away from the hits and singles The Four Seasons released a lot of mediocre material on their albums. This set contains a lot of padding and needless re-issues. As stated only for the hard core fans.
Bill says
I agree.
