Some six months after Jeff Beck's passing - and in honor of what would have been his 79th birthday this fall - the beloved British guitarist's early '70s supergroup work as one-third of Beck, Bogert & Appice will be celebrated in a new live box set.
Live in Japan 1973, Live in London 1974 is a 4CD/4LP box set offering two much-coveted sets in the short but pivotal era in which Beck, drummer/singer Carmine Appice and bassist Tim Bogert laid down a heavy duty power trio that knocked fans of The Jeff Beck Group and The Yardbirds sideways. Both have been remixed from original multitrack elements with the approval of all three band members (Bogert died in 2021; the set is dedicated to both him and Beck).
The first set in the package was recorded at Koseinenkin Hall in Osaka, Japan in the wake of Beck, Bogert & Appice's only studio album from 1973, and included songs from that album (including "Black Cat Moan," "Lose Myself with You," and Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," intended to premiere on the LP until delays led to Wonder's own version from 1972's Talking Book (which featured Beck) making it to No. 1 in America. (This Japan set was put out on LP locally, remaining a favorite among loyal collectors.)
From there, the box fast-forwards some eight months to January 26, 1974, and finds BBA headlining the Rainbow Theatre in London. While there, they tested a spate of songs that were earmarked for a second studio album. Instead, that set, as professionally recorded and later a favorite among bootleggers, became the last word on the group, which would dissolve shortly thereafter and never recorded together since.
Available on CD or vinyl, with a grape variant of the latter exclusively available at Rhino's official web store, this new box also includes informative liner notes by journalist Bruce Pilato, placing the short-lived trio in its proper context. Rare photos and memorabilia and a replica poster will also be included inside. All versions of the box are available September 15 and can be pre-ordered below.

I might be interested in a 2 CD compilation, but as of now, this 4 CD version is $80 on Amazon Canada.
Brian Stanley says
Agreed. The same content on 4 LPs should fit on 2CDs. Disappointing.
Jarmo Keranen says
Live In Japan is about 87 minutes long. So it doesn't fit in one cd. Not sure how long the Rainbow concert is, but both of those need three cd's at least!
Robert Luciani says
Beck Bogert & Appice live at the Rainbow Theatre London Jan 26 1974.
I noticed on unofficial releases, a track entitled Morning Dew. As far as I know, it's just a 12 minute drum solo not the actual song. Was this played at the Rainbow that night? If so, why is it not included on this set? Just wondering, thanks.
Bob.
Jarmo Keranen says
Some bootlegs says Jizz Wizz as Jizz Wizz/Morning Dew. It includes 10 minutes drum solo and some of the Jeff's soloing sounds like Morning Dew to my ears. So Jizz Wizz is probably the same track!
Tom J says
I will probably get this. If music fits on 3 discs, that would have been a better choice. Now, how about another 'great' short lived 70's supergroup going by just their surnames? West Bruce & Laing!!
