What's next? How about Who's Next? On September 15, The Who will revisit their seminal 1971 masterwork in a lavish 10CD/1BD box set as well as multiple smaller formats.
The Who's Next/Life House box set, by the numbers, offers 155 tracks - 89 of which are previously unissued in any version and 57 of which are brand-new remixes. This finally offers a comprehensive look at Pete Townshend's ambitious, conceptual Life House (later known as Lifehouse) project, tracing it from its roots as a follow-up to 1969's Tommy to its evolution into Who's Next.
Townshend describes Life House in his introduction to the new box set as "a portentous polemic about the coming of a nation beaten down by climate issues and pollution," continuing to imagine how "an opportunist and autocratic government enforce a national lock-down in which every person is hooked up to an entertainment grid." In Townshend's future, music becomes "a very real distraction to the subjugation of the population in suits." The songwriter's vision for Life House was all-encompassing, initially conceived as both a film script and a live musical performance. Decades later, it would become a radio play. By that time, most of its main songs including "Baba O'Riley," "Bargain," "Won't Get Fooled Again," and "Behind Blue Eyes" had become familiar due to their appearances on Who's Next and subsequent Who albums. The 2000 box set Lifehouse Chronicles was, until this box, the most comprehensive look at the project.
The biggest iteration of the new Who's Next / Life House set is a 10CD/1Blu-ray release. The audio has been newly remastered by longtime Who engineer Jon Astley, with the Blu-ray Audio disc offering new Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround remixes of the original Who's Next and 14 bonus tracks by Steven Wilson. The first CD features Astley's remaster of Who's Next, while the second and third discs present Townshend's original 1970-1971 Life House demos (many of which are previously released but but appear here in remixed form). The fourth disc travels to New York's Record Plant for March 1971 session takes; Disc Five continues in London with 1970-1972 sessions at Olympic Sound. Various session takes appear alongside released singles on Disc Six. Two concerts - each running two disc - round out the CD audio portion. Discs Eight and Nine are drawn from The Who's famed series of shows at London's Young Vic, with Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon's incendiary performance of April 26, 1971. Discs Nine and Ten are drawn from the band's 1971 San Francisco Civic Auditorium show on December 12, 1971. Both concerts have been newly mixed for this presentation.
The accompanying 100-page hardback book appears to be just as lavish. It features Townshend's introduction alongside new liner notes by compilers Andy Neil and Matt Kent. The box also premieres the 170-page Life House: The Graphic Novel. Overseen by Townshend, it chronicles the story behind the music. The set also includes the expected swag: a 20" x 30" poster of a Who concert in Sunderland, England, on May 7, 1970; a 25.5" x 34.25" poster of a date at Denver Coliseum, Denver, CO on December 10, 1971; a 20-page replica concert program from the Rainbow Theatre in London on November 4, 1971; a 16-page replica program from the band's October/November 1971 U.K. tour; a four-button set; and an 8" x 10" color photo of The Who with printed autographs.
If the 10CD/1BD box is too expansive for your taste, 180-gram 4LP and 3LP sets are also being released. The 4LP set has the remastered album plus the San Francisco concert, while the 3LP replicates Pete Townshend's original Life House acetates. The remastered Who's Next will also be available on half-speed mastered vinyl plus standard editions in black and various other colors, as well as on standalone CD. A 2CD version has the remastered album plus a selection of bonus tracks drawn from the live and studio discs.
All versions of Who's Next / Life House are due September 15 from Polydor and UMC. You'll find the track listings and pre-order links below. We will update with Amazon links as soon as they go live.

Peter Rustin says
Man, I wish the bluray were available by itself
joey says
We all wish that the blu-ray was available by itself.
This is just a piss poor marketing decision .
wardo says
I count 45 previously unreleased tracks on the 10 CDs. I don't count the multiple Wilson mixes.
At any rate, those of us who have the previous expansions of the album likely have Pete's Lifehouse Chronicles from 20 years ago. I really don't need the badges, posters, and replicas. I'll reserve judgment on the graphic novel.
And why is it two words all of a sudden?
Larry Davis says
To be honest, not a fan of this album or the Who in general...I did at first, when they were a proto-Britpop/mod band in the 60s, but with this record, they turned American & too commercial & horrid "classic rock", and "Baba O'Riley" is one of the worst songs ever written, up there with "Freebird"...one of the most overrated albums ever made, I'm steering clear...
Guy Smiley says
Cool story, bro. Thanks for the update.
Dustin says
It really was a helpful update, wasn't it? 🤣
Jim says
Why put the original album with both vinyl releases? Would rather have 1 release with the live show & demos.
Phil Cohen says
It's frustrating that the new stereo remix of the album is only on the Blu-Ray, and not offered on CD.
I ordered the 10-CD + Blu-Ray set.
zally says
i recently lost my wife and sadly my musical listening time has been diminished. sadly as much as i want this i will pass cause i know i wouldnt be able to enjoy it. to late of a release. a few years ago would of been better.great set but will pass.
Joe Marchese says
Condolences from all of us at TSD, Zally.
zally says
thank you. joe
John F says
I never fail to be astonished at how out of touch the old rockers and their marketeers are with the buying public. No Bluray is a huge buzz kill.
I had no idea that Lifehouse was "a portentous polemic about the coming of a nation beaten down by climate issues and pollution,". I thought it was about Life and Love and Pete and the band and me, personally.
Excellent review, as always. Thank you.
Love Who's Next. One of the Greats.
Artis Falkner says
Only thing that I noticed was that it's missing several of the demos on the original Lifehouse boxed set including the demo of the song Relay, which if you have heard it has an AMAZING guitar sound that only appears on that version of the song. Can't figure out why they would have a set that had less demos than the version that came out before.
Jim Johnson says
Hey there Joe! So I audited that data & I come up with 59 new songs not 89. what am I missing? Is there more content on the BD not listed? Or am I missing something? If I am right will Pete send me a free box set? I can always afford free for sure. Awesome review of the content by the way. You can file this email under "bless it's pointed little head". My background is in accounting so I had to double check. It's what I do.

I'm guessing I should hold onto my copy of "Lifehouse Elements". It seems like there's very little overlap between the tracks on that CD and what's being made available on Discs 2 & 3 of the new box set.
