The Replacements have teamed up with Rhino for their fourth mega-box set edition of a classic album from their catalogue.
After heavy-duty expansions of debut Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash, Pleased to Meet Me and a reorganized version of Don't Tell a Soul called Dead Man's Pop, the Minneapolis punk legends have announced the "Let It Bleed" edition of Tim, their first album for a major label and their last featuring the original band lineup. The 4CD/1LP box set will hit stores on September 22.
The set will feature two editions of the album: a new remaster and a new remix by Ed Stasium, issued as a corrective to the original album's mix as done by album producer Tommy Erdelyi - better known as Tommy Ramone. (Stasium, of course, produced or engineered six Ramones albums between 1977 and 1992, and also engineered the debut album by Talking Heads.) Additional bonus material includes a disc of mostly unreleased studio rarities, largely drawn from a session with Big Star frontman Alex Chilton and a previously unreleased live set from the group's 1986 tour, taken from a soundboard recording.
Tim was a crucial transition of sorts for the band. Critics and a devoted fan base admired The Replacements' work on the indie Twin/Tone label - an urgent push/pull of singer/frontman Paul Westerberg's inspired songcraft and the thrashing style of guitarist Bob Stinson, his brother Tommy on bass (who'd turn 19 a month after Tim's release) and drummer Chris Mars. But Twin/Tone's shaky distribution and the band's own finances made it hard to stay afloat; Bob Stinson was moonlighting in a pizzeria when not recording or touring. The band finally found a kindred spirit in Sire Records, whose head honcho Seymour Stein was content to let them work as they wanted. (Stein and the band were party to an infamous record company bash in Memphis in 1986 in the run-up to Pleased to Meet Me.)
Working with Erdelyi in the producer's chair, Tim boasted some of Westerberg's most inspired songs yet: edgy songs like "Swingin Party" and "Kiss Me on the Bus," the bright "Bastards of Young" and "Left of the Dial," and the subdued closer "Here Comes a Regular." ("Bastards of Young," a surefire choice for a single, was accompanied by a bizarre video, in heavy rotation on MTV's 120 Minutes and featuring a man simply listening to the song in an apartment.)
Further promotion was even more challenging: on January 18, 1986 - a week after the live set in the box - the band made a last-minute, heavily-intoxicated appearance on Saturday Night Live which earned them a ban from the program. (A show recorded weeks after that, for an aborted live album, was released by Rhino in 2017.) By summer's end, The Replacements' hard-partying ways culminated in Bob Stinson's exit from the band; he succumbed to substances in 1995, after the band had broken up. When the dust had settled, the album became the group's first to dent the Billboard 200, a sign that these misfits were somehow finding a larger audience.
The Tim box features new liner notes by 'Mats biographer Bob Mehr (a two-time Grammy winner for his notes in the Dead Man's Pop box and last year's reissue of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot), a 180-gram vinyl of Ed Stasium's album remix cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, and a new album cover for the 12" x 12" box, featuring a shot of the band in their Minneapolis practice space. Pre-orders of the album from Rhino come with a 7" of two of the unreleased studio tracks ("Nowhere is My Home" and a "cello version" of "Can't Hardly Wait").
The box is now available to pre-order everywhere.

They could fit the original and new mixes on one disc, drop the vinyl, and sell it for half the price. Thanks again, Rhino.

The Born Again Vinyl Junkies wouldn't stand for it. They're already unhappy that the set contains CDs.

Happy about this set, but with any deluxe/expanded/remastered/reissue, there are bound to be fans who find something to complain about...but they don't have to buy it, right?? I did shell out a bit for a used copy of the 2008 "Tim" 2-3 years ago (like $40) because there was no word of a set like this forthcoming or when it would come out...I wish I knew then what I know now about this set, but this looks stupendous...looking forward to hearing the Stasium remix, the other bonus tracks from the Alex Chilton session & that fun concert...will be fun to hear poor Bob going off some more...and as this set is #4, hope maybe "Let It Be" is next (hope with "The Sh*t Hits The Fans" included), then "Hootenanny", then even "All Shook Down" (with the 2 final studio tracks included) & "Stink" (which no frikking idea what they will include on that or if it will be 4 CDs and a vinyl)...still bring on the "Let It Bleed Tim"!!
