Aerosmith has a brand-new career spanning compilation available in multiple formats. The simply-titled Greatest Hits shares a name with the group's first compilation, issued back in 1980, but it's being billed as an "ultimate" product, and packaged as an entirely different set. It is, of course, the first compilation issued since the band transferred albums and material released by Columbia Records between 1973 and 2012 over to Universal Music Group for distribution in 2021. (Universal previously controlled the group's output on Geffen Records issues between 1985 and 1994, and that same year issued an archival rehearsal set recorded before the group even had a record deal.) Up to 44 tracks - hit singles, album cuts and a few rare edits - will be included in the package, covering all of the group's albums of original material featuring the classic lineup of frontman Steven Tyler, guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton, and drummer Joey Kramer. The pool of tracks will be divided on an 18-track highlights CD, a 10-track LP and a 20-song double vinyl album. Exclusively packaged versions of the CD, 2LP and 4LP variants will be sold on the band's web store, as well as exclusive merchandise bundles. A Japan-exclusive 6CD edition adds three bonus live discs.
Takling Heads, Stop Making Sense [Vinyl Deluxe Edition] (Rhino) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Rhino has a 2LP reissue of Talking Heads' seminal soundtrack to the concert film Stop Making Sense, coinciding with the film's return to theatres this summer. The new edition brings 19 songs from the various concert releases to the fold, including newly released versions of "Cities" and "Big Business/I Zimbra," which were edited into certain VHS/laserdisc releases of the film and included as DVD/Blu-ray extras. Harrison and mixer Eric "E.T." Thorngren have also completed a Dolby Atmos mix of the concert which will be released to digital platforms the same day the vinyl version arrives in stores. Read more here.
Richard Wright, Wet Dream (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
To celebrate what would haver been the late Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright's 80th birthday, Rhino is reissuing his 1978 debut Wet Dream in a variety of formats. CD and digital reissues are out today, while a vinyl LP and Blu-ray release (with a surround mix) follow in September. All formats have been remixed by Steven Wilson (Yes, Jethro Tull).
Various Artists, Abbey Road Reimagined (Cleopatra) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
The Cleopatra label offers a tribute to The Beatles' Abbey Road produced by Fernando Perdomo and featuring such artists as Jackie Lomax ("Come Together" with Durga McBroom and Snowy White) Jellyfish's Roger Manning ("Maxwell's Silver Hammer"), Vanilla Fudge's Carmine Appice ("Oh! Darling" with Eric Dover), Brian Auger ("Octopus' Garden" with Matt Axton), Arthur Brown ("I Want You (She's So Heavy)" with Steve Stevens), Rick Wakeman and Graham Bonnet ("You Never Give Me Your Money"), Matthew Sweet ("Polythene Pam"), Terry Reid ("Golden Slumbers"), and Paul Shaffer ("She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" with Adam Gaynor). Available on CD and LP.
Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros, Live at Acton Town Hall, London (Dark Horse/BMG) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
This gig was first released on vinyl in 2012; now it debuts on CD and returns to vinyl in a clear pressing. The concert was a benefit for striking firefighters and was recorded on November 15, 2002; Strummer would sadly pass away one month later. The performance includes a three-song reunion with Mick Jones of The Clash, the first time he and Strummer had performed together in roughly twenty years.
Dick Hyman, Scott Joplin: The Complete Works for Piano (Sony Classical) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Back in 1975, jazz piano great Dick Hyman (now 95 years young) recorded five volumes of "The Entertainer" composer Scott Joplin's piano works for RCA Red Seal. Now, Sony Classical is bringing together the five LPs on three CDs, newly remastered from the original analog tapes and including the original, Grammy-nominated liner notes.
Idina Menzel, Drama Queen (BMG) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
The Wicked and Frozen star has teamed with Nile Rodgers, Jake Shears, and more for an album pulsing with disco, dance, and electropop sounds as only Menzel can deliver them. Available on CD, LP, digitally, and Barnes and Noble-exclusive "sky blue" vinyl.
Jon Batiste, World Music Radio (Verve/Interscope) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Grammy and Academy Award-winning composer-leader Jon Batiste (We Are, Disney's Soul) delivers the new concept album World Music Radio. He takes the "role" of an "interstellar traveling griot DJ...who examines popular music from around the globe on a radio broadcast to the rest of the universe - begging the question, isn't all music, world music?" He's joined by Jon Bellion, J.I.D, Camilo, NewJeans, Kenny G, Lana Del Rey, and others. Available on CD, LP, Barnes & Noble-exclusive "black ice" vinyl, and digitally.
David says
CD release for Richard Wright's "Wet Dream" is – I believe – September 29, 2023.
Joe Marchese says
The CD is shipping now; the Blu-ray and vinyl LP are due in September.
David says
According to Amazon Canada: "This title will be released on September 29, 2023." And it's in reference to the compact disc edition.
Gerbrand says
It's available on the other amazons and elsewhere for a couple of weeks already. Maybe only not in Canada.
David says
Gerbrand – I see what you mean... that's curious, more than a month away... perhaps it will get fixed... I also noted that the price of the album (CD) on amazon.com is very reasonable.
Galley says
Also out today is “Mother Load” by Grace Potter. I saw her perform four years ago today, at the Woodstock 50th Anniversary celebration on the site of the original festival.
